Girls get invite to GS event May 18

All Huntington County girls in kindergarten through high school are invited to attend "My Promise My Faith" on May 18 at the Huntington Catholic School Middle Building.

The day is sponsored by Girl Scouts of Huntington County.

Participating girls will explore their own faith, meet new friends and learn about the Girl Scout law. They will also receive a free T-shirt and a "My Promise My Faith" pin and booklet.

St. Peter Church group gets an early jump on ‘Make It Shine Week’

A group from St. Peter Lutheran Church got an early start on the city-wide "Make It Shine Week."

Friends and members of the church, equipped with garden gloves, rakes, a boat and fishing waders, visited Memorial Park on Sunday, April 14, to clean up trash around and in the park's large pond.

Participants were Ron and Marcia Brown; Justin, Shay, Dylan and Molli Miller; Janette Crider; Paul and Susan Kellam; Norman Kochensparger; Dave and Joan Kendall; Jeff Derr; Dick Winkelman; George and Judy Juergens; and Jim Hoch.

St. Paul’s to hold tenderloin supper

St. Paul's County Line Church will hold its annual all-you-can-eat tenderloin supper on Saturday, April 27, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The supper will also include two side dishes, desserts and drinks. Carry out will be available.

There is a cost for tickets, with discount for children 6 to 12 years. Children 5 and under are free of charge.

Sheep group to meet on April 25

The Huntington County Sheep Producers will meet on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Family Living Building at Hier's Park, Huntington.

The agenda includes discussion of Sheep ID Day on May 4, the 2013 4-H fair sheep show and fund-raising opportunities.

All 4-H sheep members and interested producers are invited to attend.

Casual attire at BSB on Fridays results in community benefit

Bippus State Bank employees have raised $10,000 since 2006 in funds donated to the Huntington community by making a donation for the privilege of wearing jeans to work on Fridays.

Since 2006, Bippus State Bank has cumulatively raised $10,000 in community donations.

Every Friday, the bank's employees donate $2 and are allowed to wear jeans to work. The money is then put towards a community organization such as Love INC or The Salvation Army.

The donations were started by Dawn Downs, bank employee.

Downs says, "Our BSB team is fantastic. We get to wear jeans to work, and in-turn are helping our community. We love it."

The donated funds are dispersed in Huntington County at different times throughout the year.

Reust Lawn Care now offering garden bed redefining, creation

Reust Lawn Care now offers flower and garden bed redefining and creation.

Business owner Aaron Reust has added new equipment to his fleet, a Turf Tec Edger, which allows him to work on the beds.

The business, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Candlelight vigil

A candlelight vigil is held on Tuesday, April 16, outside the Huntington County Courthouse to stop child abuse and neglect. The vigil was the first held in Huntington County. The event was hosted by Huntington County Department of Child Services, the Child Protection Team and the Youth Services Bureau.

Helping Paws seeks emergency assistance after flooding washes out fund-raiser

The heavy rains April 18 and 19 that flooded Huntington's south side also washed away the funds needed to care for the nearly 300 cats being sheltered by Helping Paws.

The waters flooded Hier's Park and its Family Living Building, where Helping Paws was all set up for a fund-raising garage sale that was to have been held on Friday, April 19.

The garage sale had to be canceled and many of the items set out for the sale were ruined, says Betsy Bilyew, a volunteer with the no-kill cat shelter.

High school students can learn more about military academies on Saturday

U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman announced Academy Day on Saturday, April 27.

During the day, students will have the opportunity to learn about the application process for the United States service academies.

High school students interested in applying for nominations to the Air Force, Merchant Marines, West Point, Naval and Coast Guard Academies are encouraged to attend.

Representatives from Stutzman's office and the academies will speak with students and answer questions at the Air National Guard Base, 3004 Ferguson Rd., Fort Wayne.

HU Foundation celebrates 75 years of commitment to advancement of education

Seventy-five years ago, the Huntington University Foundation was established to promote the educational and financial interests of the college.

In celebrating that milestone, the foundation is also celebrating all that has been accomplished through the support of the community.

"The 75th anniversary of the foundation is unique and exciting because we have the opportunity to lift up the university, the Huntington community and the people and events that have helped each other succeed and grow together since 1938," says Ed Vessels, president of the foundation since 2012.

Local Huntington University students listed among ‘Who’s Who’ among US scholars

Four Huntington County residents are among the 20 Huntington University students named to the 2013 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

The local students are Samantha Brown, Austin Coffey and Gaynel Nave, all of Huntington, and Jamon Hammel, of Andrews.

Brown is studying psychology. Coffey is majoring in accounting and Nave is a biology major. Hammel has a double major, accounting and business management.
