Salamonie Summer Festival group to hold fish fry Friday Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:57 AM The Salamonie Summer Festival Committee will sponsor a fish fry on Friday, April 19, at the Knight-Bergman Center from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for presale at DeWeese, iAB financial bank, PNC Bank and The Corner Salon. Carry-out will be available and tickets will be sold at the door. Children ages 5 and under are free. The Knight-Bergman Center is located at 132 S. Nancy St., Warren. Long-stemmed carnations, corsages and vases will be sold on Friday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Right To Life office, located at 34 E. Washington St. On Saturday, sales will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Right to Life office, JCPenney, Huggy Bear on Etna Avenue, Family Dollar, Kmart, Subway on North Jefferson and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Walgreens. First Federal reports dip in net income Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:53 AM Northeast Indiana Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of First Federal Savings Bank, has announced net income of $547,000 (44 cents per diluted common share) for the first quarter of 2013, which ended March 31. That's down from the net income of $694,000 (56 cents per diluted common share) for the first quarter of 2012. The current three months earnings equate to an annualized return on average assets (ROA) of .82 percent and a return on average equity (ROE) of 7.79 percent, compared to an ROA of 1.07 percent and an ROE of 10.51percent for the same quarter of 2012. Robotics team ends season Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:50 AM Team T.H.R.U.S.T. 1501, the Huntington County 4-H Robotics team, saw its season come to an end at the Crossroads Regional at the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute that ran April 4 through 6. The team went 6-4 in the random qualification schedule, seeding 15th. Drafted by the second-seeded team to play with them, T.H.R.U.S.T. went down in quarterfinals, bringing the season to an end, as well as hopes of making it to St. Louis, MO, for the world championship. Walgreens in Huntington will be collecting unused or expired medication for safe disposal on Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pharmacy Manager Robin Baker says the event is an attempt to take old drugs out of circulation. "Residents can bring in all the medication they didn't use and we will take care of it for them," she says. She adds that the initiative is a combined effort. "The drug disposal day is sponsored by the Huntington County Prescription Abuse Task Force, which is chaired by our coroner, Phil Zahm," Baker states. ISP warns people to be aware of meth sites Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:43 AM The Indiana State Police is asking people to be aware of the possibility of coming across hazardous materials while walking, jogging and bike riding this spring. The potential exists that some people may come across trash left behind by those who have manufactured methamphetamine (meth). The Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section wants to remind citizens that this trash may contain chemicals that are toxic, flammable, corrosive and acidic. Local students present papers at HU Academic Research Forum Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:42 AM The 2013 Academic Research Forum was held on April 10 at Huntington University. The purpose of the forum is to highlight and celebrate student learning and scholarship. Department chairs nominated students from their departments to present at the forum. Local presenters included: • Alex Hoffman, a senior computer science, accounting and philosophy major from Huntington, presented on "Mythical Creatures and the Problems They Cause for the Philosophy of Language" from the area of Philosophy. Safety council to hold program about personal safety on May 8 Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:41 AM The Huntington County Safety Council will hold a personal safety program at Huntington University's Habecker Dining Commons on Wednesday, May 8, at 11:30 a.m. The program will teach situational awareness, knowing your environment, having a plan and what to do when all else fails. It will be presented by Doug Ungemach, Park- view Huntington Hospital Safety Coordinator. A lunch of roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, California blend with cheese, tossed salad, pineapple upside down cake and assorted rolls will be served. Miller earns Phi Beta Kappa status Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:39 AM Karissa Miller of Huntington has been named a top student and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, at Butler University. Miller is a biology major. She was nominated for the top student recognition program for her outstanding character, scholarship and leadership. She is also one of 33 students inducted into Butler University's chapter of national honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Students are considered for this honor based on their grade point average in liberal arts studies, typically ranking in the top 10 percent of arts and sciences majors.
