Local Boys & Girls Clubs earns national honor

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington County received an Honor Award for offering the best overall club program in clubs its size during the 106th national conference in San Diego, CA.

The organization received a $5,000 award from MetLife Foundation, sponsor of the awards program.

The awards are based on the Boys & Girls Clubs program's five core program categories: character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation.

Ride on Friday as part of Bike to Work Day in Huntington

Fetters, a bicycling enthusiast, says he rides to work as often as the weather and his schedule permit and will be on his bicycle on Friday. Fetters says he wants to encourage people in Huntington to ride their bicycles, and reminds riders to wear helmets, obey traffic laws and stay off the sidewalks. May is National Bike Month.

Great honor from Sheriff's Association

Shashawna Titus (center) was one of only 40 Hoosiers who received the Indiana Sheriff's Association Scholarship for 2012. Titus plans to attend Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, to study criminal justice. Officers will crack down on seat belt use

Law enforcement officers throughout Huntington County will be participating in the statewide "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement effort over the Memorial Day period, Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel and Huntington Police Chief E.J. Carroll have announced.

The enforcement effort will begin on Friday, May 18, and continue through June 3. Officers with the sheriff's department, Huntington Police Department and Warren Police Department will conduct special patrols around the clock to identify and ticket unrestrained motorists.

Salamonie, Lancaster plan joint VBS

Salamonie Church of the Brethren, in conjunction with Lancaster Wesleyan Church, will hold Vacation Bible School from Monday, June 11, to Friday, June 15.

VBS will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day at Salamonie Church, located on Ind.-124 between Ind.-9 and Ind.-5.

VBS will be available for 4-year-olds to those completing fifth grade. Registration is appreciated before June 11, but not necessary.

Huntington University honors 17 nursing graduates at ceremony

Seventeen Huntington University graduating nursing students were honored with a traditional pinning ceremony on Friday, May 11.

Each student received a pin bearing the emblem of the HU department of nursing in a ceremony that traces its roots back to Florence Nightingale.

Kortney Burton, of Huntington, was selected by her peers to receive the senior leadership award for the Class of 2012.

Huntington County students participating in the ceremony were Burton, Kayley Kreps and Lauren Sunderman, all of Huntington, and Carly Ellis, of Roanoke.

Crestview to host 5K to benefit YMCA

Crestview Middle School's Student Council will be holding a 5K event on Saturday, May 19, starting at the track at the school.

Runners start at 8 a.m., and at 9 a.m. a second event will be held for walkers, families, wheelchairs and strollers.

Proceeds go to the YMCA Partners with Youth fund, provides scholarships for YMCA memberships and programs for those in financial need.

Vosteen to discuss Indian weaponry June 2

Erik Vosteen, a regular presenter at Miami Indian Heritage Days, will return on June 2 to showcase Great Lakes weaponry and provide the opportunity for participants of all ages to learn to use an atlatl.

Miami Indian Heritage Days will be held at the Chief Richardville House, 5705 Bluffton Rd., Fort Wayne, the first Saturday of every month May through November from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The home of the Miami chief was recently named a national historic landmark and visitors can tour the home while on site for Vosteen's presentation.
