Children’s Choir to hold auditions May 2 at Merillat Centre

The Children's Choir of Huntington County will hold open auditions for all students in grades two through seven on Monday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m.

Auditions will be held in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington University.

No appointments are necessary. Singers will audition in groups of three or more.

Samantha Paschal is Lilly Endowment Community Scholar

Samantha Marie Paschal has been selected as this year's Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, receiving a four-year, full-tuition grant.

Paschal will receive full tuition to Purdue University, as well as an annual $800 stipend for required books and equipment.

The scholarship is awarded through the Huntington County Community Foundation.

Students can win prizes in Heritage Days coloring, essay contests

Heritage Days 2011 fun will provide two opportunities for children to "Explore Our Heritage" with "Canoes, Conestogas (Covered Wagons), and Cabins."

An essay contest will give 9 to 12-year-olds a chance to search out a historic part of Huntington's past and write about it.

A coloring contest will be offered to children ages 5-8 and includes three different pictures showing a part of Huntington's history for children to color.

Essay forms and coloring pages are available beginning May 9 at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce, 305 Warren St.

Trace Hewson completes helping project for Love INC on way to Eagle Scout status

Trace Hewson, 14, worked on getting his Eagle Scout badge on Saturday, April 23 at Love INC of Huntington County.

He called the organization to see if they needed a project completed, a release says. Hewson decided to build items out of wood - shelves, racks and a collection box - but had to raise the money, get the shelves designed and put them together.

The three shelves and four clothing racks are each eight feet long and the donation drop box measures 6 feet by 3 feet.

He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 130.

 

VNC to have employment seminar

Victory Noll Center will present the program "Support Seminar for the Unemployed" on Wednesday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The seminar is for people who are not working, and who desire to find a job. The purpose is to offer emotional support, as well as providing opportunities that will help clarify necessary skills, educational resources, and practical strategies.

A number of local agencies will have staff members on hand who will be making presentations and hosting workshops to offer training and other informational opportunities.

VFW Auxiliary sets Buddy Poppy sales for April 30

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 and its Ladies' Auxiliary will hold the annual Buddy Poppy fund-raiser on Saturday, April 30.

Representatives of the Ladies' Auxiliary will sell the paper flowers, which are assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals.

The poppies will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Walmart, Kmart, Walgreens and Owen's north and south.

On May 7, VFW members will man roadblocks from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersections of North Jefferson and MacGahan streets and South Jefferson Street and Etna Avenue.

Huntington Tea Party invites mayoral, other political candidates to ‘meet and greet’

Mayoral candidates and other local candidates have been invited to participate in a "meet and greet" on Saturday, April 30, sponsored by the Huntington TEA Party.

The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Candidates will be asked to introduce themselves and briefly explain their platforms. Refreshments will then be served, and those attending can mingle, ask questions and discuss issues with the candidates.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 3.

Lafollete completes Air Force basic at Lackland

Air Force Airman Tonya T. Lafollette graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

She is the daughter of Teresa Crago and Thomas Crago, both of Huntington.

Spring Family Festival is Saturday at Heritage Hall

The Council Against Domestic Violence of Huntington County will be hosting its seventh annual Spring Family Festival on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held in Heritage Hall at Hier's Park.
Agencies and organizations serving children and families in Huntington County will provide activities including arts and crafts, carnival games, musical performances and hands-on educational experiences.

HNHS band members to play in HU concert

Several members of the Huntington North High School bands will perform with the Huntington University Wind Ensemble today, April 28.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will take place in the Merillat Center of the Arts, on the university's campus.

Participating members are Andrew Anderson, flute; Lukas Kaylor, clarinet; Jessica Keller, alto sax; Andrew McElhaney, tenor sax; Kaylie Killian and Edward Yanes, both trumpet; Jesikah Leeper, French horn; and John Gardner, assistant band director.

Jackson Township alumni to gather

The annual Roanoke and Jackson Township High School alumni banquet will be held Saturday, May 14, at Roanoke Elementary School.

Social hour is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and dinner will follow.

Tickets can be purchased at the PNC Bank on First Street or at the Bippus State Bank on Main Street, both in Roanoke, through Thursday, May 5.

Reservations are required. Tickets will not be available at the door on the night of the event.

Pianist Joe Thomas will provide the entertainment.

Roanoke Lions to have guest speakers

The Roanoke Lions Club announces its guest speakers for two meetings in May.

On Monday, May 2, Roanoke Town Treasurer Joanne Kirchner will be the guest speaker.

Sheila Hines, Jackson Township trustee, will be the guest speaker on May 16.

All meetings are held at the Roanoke Heritage Center and Museum and start at 7 p.m.

Refreshments will be served following the presentation. The meetings are open to the public.

The Heritage Center and Museum is located at the corner of First and Main streets in downtown Roanoke.

 

Huntington University students participate in Student Lobby Day

Ten Huntington University students participated in a Student Lobby Day in Indianapolis, sponsored by the Independent Colleges of Indiana, on April 20.

During the day, students talked to their individual representatives, including Reps. Matthew Lehman and Dan Leonard, and other state legislators, including Sen. Travis Holdman and Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman, about the need for better state financial aid programs for institutions of higher education while also observing the give-and-take of the legislative process.
