Safety council taking registration for Feb. 9 program

The Huntington County Safety Council is now accepting registrations for the program, "Bloodborne Pathogens - Everything You Need to Know," to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Huntington University Ha-becker Dining Commons.

The program will be presented by Diane Casey, of Parkview Occupational Health, and Chris Mabie, of Premier Medical Waste.

Overby completes basic

Air Force Airman Mykel E. Overby graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Overby is a 2004 graduate of Huntington North High School and is the son of Gerald Overby, of Huntington.

Martinez wins school spelling bee

Anthony Martinez was crowned winner of Horace Mann Elementary School's Spelling Bee on Monday, Jan. 10.

Martinez captured the title by correctly spelling "quarterback."

He is the son of Linda Martinez.

Jake Fowler, son of Marc and Pam Fowler, was the runner-up.

The win qualifies Martinez to participate in the Huntington County Spelling Bee, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 7.

 

Crestview musicians earn awards at ISSMA contest

The regional ISSMA Solo & Ensemble contest was held Saturday, Jan. 29 at Bellmont High School in Decatur.

Several Crestview Middle School students participated in the competition in groups I-V. Results are as follows:

Voice Solo
• Samantha Kirk - Silver in Group V.
• Alix Latta - Gold in Group V.
• Jaycee Thorn - Gold in Group V.
• Jenayle McIntyre - Gold in Group V.
• Jowaun Scher - Silver in Group IV.

Psi Iota Xi to award multiple scholarships

Phi Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority is now accepting applications for scholarships to be awarded during the 2011-12 academic year.

The chapter will award scholarships totaling several thousand dollars, including:

• The Marjorie Bayless Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student majoring in the field of speech and hearing.

• The Anne Pfister Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a female student majoring in business.

• The Mildred Briggs Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student majoring in education.

Keenon, Woolard earn Optimist youth awards

Huntington Catholic students Chrysa Keenon and Olivia Woolard were presented with youth appreciation awards for the month of January by the Optimist Club of Huntington.

Keenon, an eighth-grader, is involved in basketball, volleyball, Girl Scouts, choir, drama club and has been named to the honor roll.

She is the daughter of Bruce and Linda Keenon.

Trivia buffs invited to test knowledge at HCS event

Huntington Catholic School will host its second annual trivia night on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 23 1/2 E. Market St., Huntington.

To register a table of 10, call the school office at 356-2320 or contact Andy Zay at 356-1588 or azay@sbcglobal.net.

There is a fee per table, and cash prizes will be awarded to the "smartest" table.

Proceeds will benefit Huntington Catholic School.

 

Lincoln Elementary School awards recognition to honor roll students

Lincoln Elementary School has announced the names of students who earned honor roll status for the second quarter of the 2010-11 school years.
Honor roll students are:
