Individuals outside hurricane area can help by donating blood, platelets

As the American Red Cross responds to Hurricane Florence, providing food, shelter and comfort to those affected, individuals outside the affected areas are urged to help by giving blood or platelets to care for patients in the storm’s path and across the country. People can also help by making a financial donation to support relief efforts.

Indiana conservation officers to hold trapper’s education course at UWIS

Indiana conservation officers will host a trapper’s education course at the Salamonie Interpretive Center Oct. 13 to 14. The program will focus on trappers of all ages, though youth trappers are encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m. participants will learn about conservation, trapping issues, ethics and regulations. Trappers will get to set traps for furbearers under the instructors’ supervision. Traps will be left overnight and checked the next day.

Fall clean-up on 200W set for Oct. 13

A fall clean up day of CR-200W, between Waterworks and Division roads, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event will last from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine.

Participants are asked to meet at the Chief LaFontaine Saddle Club, 792N-200W, at 7:30 a.m. for instructions.

Gloves, bags and traffic directions will be provided.

Vengeful bellhop and coworkers on prowl when Haunted Hotel opens

A vengeful bellhop and his coworkers will be on the prowl at the Haunted Hotel: 13th Floor when it opens for the season on Friday, Sept. 28.

That will be the premise this season at the venerable downtown Huntington Halloween-time attraction. One of the attraction’s most prominent characters each season has been Eldon, a bellhop at the fictional hotel, and Brett Molitor, the attraction’s owner, says the bag-carrier is feeling rebellious this year.

“He’s leading a revolt of the staff,” he shares.

Medicare Educational Seminar is set for Saturday at SS. Peter & Paul

A Medicare Educational Seminar will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Parish Center (the former convent on Poplar St.).

Attendees can learn if they are eligible for Medicare benefits and find out how Medicare works.

The seminar will be presented by parishioners Steve Godfroy and Pamela Johnston.

City of Huntington says thanks at Volunteer Appreciation BBQ

The City of Huntington handed out several awards at its fourth annual Volunteer Appreciation Cookout on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Laurie Park.

Anyone who had served as a volunteer for the city over the past year was invited to attend the event. City employees served up a free meal of hot dogs, hamburgers and sides to attendees.

HU plans special visit day for ex-Harrison students

Huntington University Admissions and the HU Department of Nursing will co-host a special visit day for former Harrison College nursing students on Thursday, Oct. 4. This event will be tailored to those individuals looking for transition opportunities due to the recent closing of Harrison College.

The event will include a tour of the HU nursing facilities, a meet-and-greet experience with the nursing faculty and staff, a campus tour and a Q&A panel with former ITT nursing students who went through a similar transition in 2016.

Marching Vikes to have public show Sept. 28

The Huntington North Marching Band will perform its 2018 competition show for the public at Kriegbaum Field on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. The presentation will last 30 to 45 minutes. Admission is free.

The band’s 2018 competition program is titled“Look On My Works.” It features original music and is inspired by the Percy Shelley sonnet ​“Ozymandias​,” which reflects on the reign and downfall of Egyptian pharaoh Ramseses II, who reigned from 1279 to 1213 BCE.

In the first three weeks of competition so far, the Marching Vikes have placed second, third and second.

Habitat hails merger

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne will celebrate its merger with Huntington County with a Panel Build Kick-off on Saturday, Sept. 29. The event will consist of a brand-new home build and several repair projects on Drover Street in Huntington.

The framing of the new home for Huntington resident Darian LaVine and several home repair projects in the neighborhood begins at 1354 Drover St. Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A trio of registered nurses at Parkview Huntington Hospital – all looking forward to careers as family nurse practitioners – has each been awarded a Jill Dreyer Scholarship for the fall 2018 semester.

Justin Asher, Megan Krom and Kathleen Leckrone each received $1,000 toward their education costs for the current academic semester.

The awards were announced by Mike Perkins, director of Parkview Huntington Foundation, which administers the Jill Dreyer funds.

Paper Artisans’ Fall Crop set for Oct. 20

The Huntington County Extension Homemakers Club Paper Artisans’ Fall Crop will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the First Merchants Heritage Hall, located on the Huntington County Fairgrounds, 631 E. Taylor St., Huntington.

Some of the vendors that will be in attendance include 31 Bags, Stampin’ Up and Creative Memories. They will have products for sale and will give demonstrations throughout the day.
