Easterday is recipient of Lincoln’s Heith Garner Memorial Scholarship

Lincoln Caring Families has announced that Blaze Easterday is the 2018 recipient of Lincoln’s Heith Garner Memorial Scholarship. She was presented a $500 check by Sally Morrison, Lincoln Family Involvement coordinator, during the school’s recent fifth-grade celebration.

Easterday attended Lincoln throughout her entire elementary career, 2005 to 2011. While keeping up with her grades through high school, she volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and worship leader at her church, as well as the soup kitchen downtown, Blessings in a Backpack and Salvation Army.

Rob Mayo Scholarships

Chris Rice (first from left), chair of the Knights of Columbus Council 1014 charitable giving committee, presented a group of recent Huntington North High School graduates with Rob Mayo Scholarships on Thursday, June 7, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, in Huntington. The one-year scholarships were funded by donations to the Knights of Columbus and proceeds from the Nun Run 5K & Brother Boogie 10K. Scholarship recipients were (starting second from left) Bailey Hughes, Rileigh Johnson, Katie Paolillo, Zachary Lippe and Jack Young.

Cancer Services for Huntington Co. to have annual fund-raiser Monday

Cancer Services for Huntington County will have its annual fund-raiser on Monday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at B&K Rootbeer Stand, 1218 S. Jefferson St., Huntington.

Cancer Services will receive $1 from each order and will provide patrons with cookies and a brochure that explains more details about the organization. Donations are optional.

For 58 years, Cancer Services has provided assistance to cancer patients in Huntington County with mileage reimbursement to and from treatment centers and assistance with prescription drug purchases.

Metro Kiwanis hands out scholarships to pair from HNHS

The Huntington Metro Kiwanis presented two local students, Karmen Koch and Benjamin Warpup, with scholarships at the club’s Monday, May 14 meeting. The scholarships presented that evening were the Chuck Wohlford Memorial and the Huntington Metro Kiwanis.

Koch received the Huntington Metro Kiwanis scholarship for $1,500 for majoring in the field of human service. Koch is the daughter of John and Joy Koch of Huntington. She will be majoring in pharmacy at Butler University and aspires to be a clinical pharmacist.

Mississinewa Lake to host ‘Fireworks Over’ on June 23

Mississinewa Lake will host “Fireworks over Mississinewa” on Saturday, June 23, at 10 p.m.

The 30-minute show will include a 16-inch mortar, believed to be the largest to be fired in Indiana. A total of 518 mortars ranging from 3 to 16 inches will be fired during the show.

Visitors can watch the show by land or lake. On land, visitors can set up lawn chairs and blankets at the beach. Arrive early because parking will be limited. Campers are encouraged to walk from their campsites due to parking limitations.

Cattlemen to meet on June 20

The Huntington County Cattlemen will meet on Wednesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. in the Huntington County Courthouse Annex conference room.

The agenda items include planning for the 2018 Huntington County 4-H Fair. Other old/new business will be discussed.

Fire dept.’s success could save bucks for Hgtn. Twp. residents

Huntington Township Volunteer Fire Department’s first ISO rating may result in a financial boon for about 6,000 citizens in the potential reduction of insurance premiums.

The fire department, along with Township Trustee Tim Guy, is excited about the rating, which came back as a “4/4Y” ISO (Insurance Services Office)/PPC (Public Protection Classification) on a 10-point scale, with Class 1 being the highest rating.

Gradeless grads from 4-year seminary program

Huntington high school student Sydnee Gradeless has graduated from a four-year seminary program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Over four years of high school, Gradeless studied the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon and history of the Latter-day Saint faith.

The graduation diploma is awarded to students who receive certificates of completion for all four courses of study. With this degree, students are eligible to receive an ecclesiastical visa to be called to any LDS mission throughout the world.
