Bridge construction

Construction was begun last week on the bridge on Etna Avenue between Waterworks Road and CR200N as part of the Etna Avenue Improvement Project. The closure is expected to last approximately 45 days. A detour has been established and will use Waterworks Road, Ind.-5, Division Road and CR300W. Appropriate detour signage has been installed to guide traffic.

Riverview Middle School announces honor roll students for entire year

Riverview Middle School has announced the following students who have achieved the honor roll for the entire 2017-2018 school year.

Smart, Brunner earn PHH Guild scholarships

Miranda Smart and Kayla Brunner have been awarded scholarships by the Parkview Huntington Hospital Guild.

Smart, a rising sophomore studying at Ball State University, Muncie, plans to continue her studies toward a master’s degree in speech pathology at that institution. This is the second time she has been awarded a scholarship by the hospital guild. She is the daughter of Todd and Laura Smart of Huntington.

Salamonie Elementary announces perfect attendance students for 4Q

Salamonie Elementary School has announced the following students who have achieved perfect attendance for the fourth quarter of the 2017-2018 school year.

Citizens Police Academy set to go

The Huntington Police Department, in conjunction with the Huntington University Police Department, is offering its first Citizens Police Academy, which is set to begin on Aug. 29.

The classes will be held at Huntington University every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with graduation ceremonies held Oct. 17.

The Parkview Huntington Family YMCA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly constructed pool patio on Wednesday, June 6.

“This addition should be a great gathering place for kids, families and Seniors who want to get some sunshine as they are enjoying our aquatics center,” said YMCA CEO and Executive Director Ben Davis. “Whether you’re here for swim lessons, open swim, water exercise class or swim team, we think the new space will get a lot of use.”

Number of locals graduate from Ivy Tech recently

Ivy Tech Community College has announced the spring 2018 dean’s list for the Fort Wayne campus and Warsaw site.

The dean’s list, prepared and published each term, gives recognition to students who are degree-seeking, achieve a minimum 3.50 grade point average in non-academic skills advancement courses with no Ds or Fs, earn six or more Ivy Tech Credits during the semester and have earned at least 12 non-academic skills advancement credits during their course of study.

Churches collaborate to give Zanesville youth a variety of activities to keep busy this summer

The Zanesville Youth Program is currently being held every Tuesday and Thursday through July 5.

The program, which offers summertime activities, is a collaboration between Zanesville United Meth-odist Church, Zanesville Church of God and Zanesville United Brethren Church.

It is open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade, with youth in middle school and high school invited to serve as junior leaders that look after younger participants. College-aged individuals serve as coaches that help oversee the program.

10 area students graduate from Trine University on May 5

More than 900 Trine University students earned degrees and were recognized at the university’s Commencement ceremony on May 5.

Area students among the graduates included:

Cameron Buzzard, of Warren, who graduated with a degree in exercise science-pre phys therapy 3+3.

Kole Hale, of Warren, who graduated with a degree in biology.

Corben Havener, of Zanesville, who graduated with a degree in sport management.

Doyle King, of Huntington, who graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Pathfinder staff attends conference

Pathfinder Services has announced it sent staff to the Rural LISC Seminar, an annual national conference for rural community development professionals.

This year’s seminar was held in Washington, D.C. May 15 to 18 and provided opportunities to visit with congressional representatives on Capitol Hill; gain valuable insight into ways to improve communities in the wake of natural disasters; and offered networking opportunities with rural colleagues from around the country.
