Reading to future Vikings

Abby Horn (right), a junior at Huntington North High School, reads a book she wrote and illustrated in English class titled “Leo the Lying Lion” to a group of second-grade students at Roanoke Elementary School during Future Vikings Day. This special day gave second-graders from area schools the opportunity to interact with high school students, take a tour of the high school and eat lunch as “future Vikings.”

Extension office to host 3 spring break ‘staycation’ workshops

The Huntington County Extension office will offer three Spring Break Staycation Workshops for youth in grades 3 through 12.

Participants do not have to be 4-H members to attend. The workshops will be held at the Extension Office, 1340 S. Jefferson St., Huntington, on March 26, 27 and 28.

• Monday, March 26, will be cake decorating at 2 p.m. Kids will learn the basics of cake decorating and will take home their own decorated treat.

Parkview Huntington holding Healthy Steps on April 14

For fans of Healthy Steps, Parkview Huntington Hospital’s (PHH) semi-annual wellness fair, April typically means getting necessary lab testing done at a reduced rate. The spring event will take place on Saturday, April 14, from 7 to 11 a.m., in the hospital lobby and lower level.

While lab testing is one of the centerpieces of the event, Healthy Steps offers much more to help area residents create a healthier lifestyle.

Northwest Elementary School names 3rd quarter perfect attendance students

Northwest Elementary School officials recently released the names of students with perfect attendance for the third quarter of the 2017-2018 school year.

Those students are:

Haden Baumgardner, Miller Baumgardner, Emmalee Best, Levi Bilyeu, Jaxon Brooks, Haden Brown, Katelyn Burkhart, Brady Carter, Brayden Clabaugh, Walker Clark, Cale Craig, Laura Craig, Adele Cryderman and Keeley Cryderman.

Also, Melania Daugherty, Kyler Dennis, Brooklyn Esslinger, Brooklynn Estep, Mason Estep, Kiptyn Felton, Harper Forni, Lanie Foster and Caleigh Gordon.

Local Tri Kappas taking scholarship apps

Chi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa is currently accepting applications for both general and Laura Blackburn scholarships.

For the general category, an applicant must be a high school senior planning to graduate in the spring and continue their education at a post-secondary institution.

The Laura Blackburn Scholarship requires the applicant be a college student or high school senior planning to graduate in the spring, pursuing a career in education.

The deadline to apply is April 1.

Hgtn. library has VR set-up for public to try out

Virtual Reality, also known as VR, is the latest trend, but it can be expensive or difficult to experience it at home. The Indiana State Library has loaned the Huntington City-Township Public Library a VR setup, and the public is invited to come try it for themselves.

Sessions will be held Saturday, April 7, from noon to 2 p.m. and Monday, April 16, from noon to 2 p.m. as well.

The setup includes a headset for complete VR immersion as well as a kit for using one’s smartphone instead.

All ages are invited.

Main Street facade program has changes

The City of Huntington, in partnership with volunteers from Main Street Huntington, has offered Main Street façade and roof grants to commercial properties in designated grant areas since 2010.

As the city prepares for the 2018 grant cycle, it has made changes to the program in response to its popularity. A newly established Commercial Façade & Roof Grant (CFRG) Program will now replace the Main Street Grant program, allowing Main Street volunteers more time to pursue other projects and state grant opportunities to enhance the downtown area.

Huntington library to host Sculpey Workshops for teens

The Huntington City-Township Public Library will host calming Sculpey Workshops for teens each Saturday in April from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Teens can come create something using just their hands and this polymer clay, then take their creations home and bake them to harden them permanently. Step away from homework, social media, and technology in general in this peaceful, hands-on “craft”ernoon session.

The Huntington Branch is located at 255 W. Park Drive, Huntington. For more information call 356-0824.

Questa Scholars Program apps available on website through May 1

Questa Education Foundation recently announced the Questa Scholars Program application is available on its website through May 1.

Anyone considering further education could be helped by this funding.

Questa offers low-interest forgivable loans for students pursuing a certificate, associate or bachelor degree from an Indiana college or university. The program offers a unique way for a student to fund the financial “gap” in the cost of attendance.
