HARTA to sponsor several local events for National Opening Day for Trails

The Huntington Area Recreation Trails Association (HARTA) will sponsor several local events to celebrate the National Opening Day for Trails on Saturday, April 7. HARTA sponsored a Zombie run last October.

The Huntington Area Recreational Trails Association (HARTA) will be sponsoring local events to celebrate the National Opening Day for Trails on Saturday, April 7.

Every year in early April, trail associations and sponsor groups use the day to mark the beginning of seasonal trail use on walking, biking and running trails throughout the United States.

HARTA will begin festivities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newest section of the Erie Rail Trail at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the trailhead on Gragg Street between College Avenue and Stults Road/200W.

Brianna Spurgeon (right), of Huntington and her son, Carter, 6, pick out books from the children’s section of the Andrews-Dallas Township Public Library Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, March 17. The sale was a hit in its first hour open, with patrons filling the library’s basement in search of books and snapping up baked goods.

Beacon Credit Union to kick off Project Spotlight March 20

Beacon Credit Union will kick off its eighth annual Project Spotlight on Tuesday, March 20.

Project Spotlight is a program created by Beacon Credit Union with the hope that individuals and organizations will be inspired to reach out and serve those living and working around them. The campaign takes place in all 12 of the communities that Beacon has a full service branch located.

Purdue Extension offers childcare training classes for providers

Purdue Extension will offer training for childcare and preschool providers on April 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on topics focused on enlightening and entertaining the staff and children at area facilities.

Purdue Extension educators will present a workshop from the “I am Moving I am Learning” curriculum. This research-based program will allow participants to earn two hours of education towards their Paths to Quality certification.

Programs focus on school readiness, increasing activity and movement, child development and healthy eating.

Vaccination clinic fund-raiser

Canine Capers is holding its annual vaccination clinic fund-raiser on April 7 in the First Federal Savings Bank Community Building on the Huntington County Fairgrounds from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

All vaccinations are by appointment only, to ensure there are enough vaccines for all attendees. Organizers request that dogs be kept on a leash and maintained control of.

There is a fee for vaccinations, as well as other services, which include nail trimming, heartworm testing and microchipping.

Riverside Veterinary Clinic, in Huntington, is sponsoring the event.

Frischmans honored for volunteer work

The presentation was made at the United Way Thank You Celebration held Wednesday, March 14. The Frischmans, who were unable to attend the luncheon, were honored for their volunteer work with the United Way.

Adam Fusselman was happy with the amount raised in the 2017 United Way Campaign, but he worked the crowd to make the total even better.

The $575,000 raised was only $3,000 shy of United Way’s goal of $578,000, reaching 99 percent of that goal, Fusselman, the 2017 campaign chair, told attendees at the agency’s annual thank you celebration, held Wednesday, March 14, at Huntington First Church of the Nazarene.

Rachel Ervin was crowned the 2018 Miss Warren, in a pageant held Sunday, March 11, in Warren. Lola Smith won the Junior Miss Warren title and Nora McDaniel was named Little Miss Warren.

Twenty contestants vied for the top spot in the three categories, Miss Warren (ages 14-18), Junior Miss Warren (ages 9-13) and Little Miss Warren (ages (5-8).

Ind.-124 to close in April for bridge repair

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that Ind.-124 is scheduled to close for bridge rehabilitation on two bridges in Huntington County on or after Monday, April 2, weather permitting.

The road closures are scheduled to take place on two bridges on Ind.-124:

• Ind.-124 over the Salamonie River, between C.R. S. 300W and C.R. S. 350W.

• Ind.-124 over Brook Creek, between C.R. S. 200W and C.R. S 300W.

Successful rock hunt

Huntington North High School special education student Reid Pickard successfully finds a painted rock in the Huntington North library on Wednesday, March 14. Special ed students enjoyed an activity that had them searching for rocks painted by a theater class at HNHS as well as candy, just as a way to have a little fun during the school day, noted theater teacher Ruth Reed.
