USPS announces holiday mailing deadlines

Cards and packages need to get in the mail soon in order to reach their destinations before Christmas, the United States Postal Service says.

Military mail deadlines are Nov. 27 for space available mail, Dec. 4 for parcel airlift mail, Dec. 11 for priority mail service or first-class mail service and Dec. 16 for priority mail express military service.

Original art offered for sale at HU

Original works of art created by Huntington University students and faculty members will be available for purchase during the department of art and design’s annual Christmas sale Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

The sale will take place each day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Robert E. Wilson Gallery of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
It will include functional pottery, paintings, illustrations, photography and sticker designs.

Proceeds will support the ongoing study and work of Huntington University’s art and design students and faculty.

Pathfinder introduces Little River Art Studio at OH

Representatives of Pathfinder Services’ Little River Art Studio presented a nearly-life-sized papier maché moose to a representative of the Huntington Moose Lodge on Friday, Nov. 17, a tribute to the day 51 years ago that members of the local organization went door to door throughout the community to enlist 1,001 members and raise funds in order to found an agency that would serve people with disabilities. Pathfinder Services introduced its newest component, the Little River Art Studio, during an open house Friday afternoon, Nov. 17.

Artists from Creative Abundance Consulting, based in Columbus, OH, worked with the Pathfinder staff to implement the arts program, designed for clients participating in Pathfinder’s day services program. Community members are also welcome to take part in the activities.

Son-Rise Bakery in Warren moves to bigger quarters just down block

Son-Rise Bakery in Warren has moved to a new location, just about a block from where it was previously located.

The bakery, which opened about a year ago, has moved to 114 N. Wayne St. into the building formerly occupied by The Flower Pot, which recently closed.

Krysta and Cory Fornal, owners of Son-Rise Bakery, bought the building from its previous owner and opened at the new location on Oct. 26.

“I thought the building was great,” says Krysta Fornal. “All the doors just opened up and we took it as a God-sign.”

Keeping kids warm

Adam Harris to take over oldest Jones office in Hgtn.

Adam Harris has been named to take over the local Edward Jones office located at 2859 Northpark Ave., Suite 108, Huntington.

Harris will be working with Chuck Harris to serve investors throughout the community.

Expanded PHH rehab center to bear name of late dept. leader

An expanded rehabilitation and wellness center at Parkview Huntington Hospital will be named in honor of the woman who led that department until her death last June, Parkview Health administrators announced on Friday, Nov. 17.

“This remarkable woman touched countless lives,” PHH President Juli Johnson said of Holly Sale. “This project is her gifts to us … It is her legacy, the sum of her life’s work.”

Donations to Huntington County Promise can be doubled

Qualifying donations made to Huntington County Promise on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28, can be doubled.

Through the 1:1 Fund, Huntington County Promise will receive a dollar-for-dollar match on every donation up to $500 per individual donor.

Donations will be used to help local youth open CollegeChoice 529 accounts with an initial $25 deposit and to encourage families to contribute to the accounts by providing matching funds for their own deposits.

Huntington County Promise has set a goal of raising $5,000 in 24 hours on Nov. 28.

Salamonie Senior Lunch set for Dec. 4 at Salamonie Lake Interpretive Center

The monthly Salamonie Senior Luncheon will be on Monday, Dec. 4, at the Salamonie Lake Interpretive Center.

The luncheon will  celebrate “50 Years of Salamonie Lake.” Audience members and past and present employees will share memories from the past 50 years. A slide show will also be presented.

The program begins with a carry-in meal at noon. A main dish of a sloppy joe sandwich will be provided. Guests should bring a side dish to share, a beverage and their own table service. A donation will be accepted for the meal. Reservations may be made by calling 468-2127.

FSA members have until Dec. 4 to return County Committee ballots

Indiana Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Steven E. Brown reminds eligible farmers that they have until Dec. 4 to return their ballots in the 2017 County Committee elections.

In Huntington County, the ballots should be returned to the Huntington Service Center, 2040 Ri-verfork Drive West, Huntington, IN 46750.

Nearly 7,700 FSA County Committee members serve FSA offices nationwide. Each committee has three to 11 elected members who serve three-year terms of office. One-third of county committee seats are up for election each year.
