HNHS cheer parents turn to flocks of flamingos for October fund-raiser

The Huntington North High School Cheer Parent Group is holding a Cheer Flocking fund-raiser thr-oughout October.

Residents can make a donation to the HNHS cheer squad and select a friend to have a flock of pink plastic flamingos planted in their front lawn for 24 hours, along with a sign explaining that the flamingos benefit the cheer squad. The flamingos will be set up and removed by a member of the parent group.

The donor can have a letter sent to the recipient of the flamingos or can choose to remain anonymous.

Historic Warren lining up participants for Holiday Walk and Festival of Trees

The Historic Warren organization is seeking businesses and community members to participate in its Holiday Walk and Festival of Trees, to be held on Nov. 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Participating businesses will open their doors to guests, offering visitors a small treat or shopping incentive to be used that evening or on a return visit.

Individuals, families and adult and youth organizations, as well as businesses, can sign up to decorate a tree to be displayed in one of the businesses or outdoors.

Riley earns national FFA honor

Madison Riley, a Huntington University junior from Goshen, will receive the American FFA Degree from the National FFA organization during the FFA’s national convention, to be held Oct. 25 through Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.

Riley is a student in HU’s Haupert Institute for Agricultural Studies, where she is majoring in agrimanagement and agrimarketing.

Riley has helped establish and lead the Collegiate Farm Bureau chapter at HU and was instrumental in bringing HU into partnership with Agriculture Future of America, says Dr. Raymond Porter, director of the Haupert Institute.

Troop 130 holding open house Oct. 23 Troop

The scouts of Boy Scout Troop 130 invite families with young men ages 11 to 17 who are interested in Boy Scouts to attend an open house on Monday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Life Church, in Huntington.

Boys can talk to scouts and scout leaders about the troop’s outdoor activities program as well as rank advancement and merit badge programs, and parents can direct questions about scouting to Troop 130 parents and leaders. Refreshments will be served.

Belinda Klemann has returned to Lox Inc., in Huntington.

Klemann has 28 years of experience as a hairstylist. She specializes in men’s, women’s and children’s cuts, as well as color perms, facial waxing and pedicures.

She joins stylists Lu Ann Hobbs, Mary Bradberry, Liz Wilson, Dianne Beard and Christy Snover at Lox.

YSB to offer training in suicide prevention

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County will be hosting a QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) training on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  

This free suicide prevention training will be held at the Youth Services Bureau’s office at 1344 Maple Drive, Huntington.  

Participants will learn local and state statistics, myths and facts, warning signs and risk factors, local resources and much more as it relates to suicide.

HNHS in pilot media arts program at H’well

Huntington North High School, along with four other area high schools, is participating in a pilot media arts program at the Honeywell Center, in Wabash.

The program, which meets every school day afternoon, is offered through a collaboration between the Honeywell Foundation and Heartland Career Center. It offers hands-on learning with state-of-the-art media equipment for students interested in the media arts and connects students with media professionals from across the United States.

The students can earn dual credit through Vincennes University.

Begley to speak at 1st Nazarene

Rev. Paul Begley will speak on “Bible Prophecy for Today” on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Huntington First Church of the Nazarene.

Begley will teach about understanding today’s world events from a Biblical perspective. Separate subjects will be taught at each meeting.

He has a television program each Sunday night, a website at www.paulbeg leyprophecy.com and a YouTube channel, where he has more than 100,000 followers.

Discovering asteroids

Pathfinder seeking nominations for annual Herbert D. LaMont Award

Pathfinder Services, Inc. is seeking nominations of an individual or organization in the community who has made an extra effort to assist persons with developmental disabilities.

Nominations for the 32nd annual Herbert D. LaMont Award must be made by Thursday, Oct. 26.

The award is given in memory of Herbert D. LaMont, who was a major force in the development of services for persons with disabilities in Huntington County. He was also an early supporter of Pathfinder Services, Inc.

Teens on Town to visit Cedar Creek Produce for pumpkins and hayride

Teens on the Town, a program provided by Pathfinder Community Supports, will visit Cedar Creek Produce on Friday, Oct. 13, to get pumpkins and go on a hayride.  

The group will go out to dinner afterwards.

Teens should arrive at the Pathfinder Community Supports office, at 1152 E. State St. in Huntington, by 4:30 p.m. and be picked up at 8:30 p.m.

Transportation to and from Cedar Creek Produce will be provided by Pathfinder Services.
