Teens can jazz up frames

Teens will get the chance to turn some old photo frames into something chic and modern with the Huntington City-Township Public Library’s Upcycled Picture Frames workshops.

Part One takes place Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. at the Huntington branch and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. at the Markle branch.

Part Two takes place Saturday, Sept. 23, at noon at the Huntington Branch.

This is a hands-on program that involves using a miter saw, hammer, nails, drill and screwdriver.

Habitat will recycle latex paint

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Habitat ReStore of Greater Fort Wayne, in Huntington, will accept latex paint for recycling.

There is a charge for each can turned in.

The service is provided through a partnership with American Paint Recyclers. Funds generated from the paint recycling will support the Habitat mission to build affordable housing in Huntington County.

The Habitat ReStore is at 250 Commerce Drive, Huntington. Paint may be dropped off during regular business hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Library dives into slime, paper

The Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library features hands-on activities for children and adults alike on Saturday, Sept. 16.

At 10 a.m., children ages 6 through 12 years can get messy in a Slime Making 101 workshop. Fluffy, glittery, magnetic and more — a wide variety of slime types will be available for children to craft themselves.

SAM Labor Day Tractor Pull

For the 68th year, tractors and third drivers gathered in Warren on Labor Day weekend to test both the power of the tractor and the skill of the driver. The pull, sponsored by the Salamonie Active Men, began Friday, Sept. 1, and continues through tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 4, at the Knight Bergman Center in Warren. West Rock Creek class of 1967 to hail its 50th grad anniversary

The West Rock Creek High School class of 1967 will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its graduation year, along with the honored classes of 1947 and 1957 at the annual alumni gathering on Sept. 9.

Class members are John Allen, Jack Britt, Gary Geiger, Dave Greene, Brenda Hardin Hacker, Robert Johnson, Robert Mautz, Dee McClurg, Gary Shroyer, Mark Summers and Tom Will. Members Mike Harshman and Don Resler are deceased.

Markle event center reopens with new owners

An event center in downtown Markle has reopened with a slightly new name and completely new ownership.

All Your Expectations, formerly known simply as Expectations, is now owned by rural Markle residents Zach and Hillary Halsema.

But the Halsemas have added a new twist — Zach Halsema has installed a small bakery at the rear of the event center.

“My dream was to open a bakery,” he says.

Markle library branch to host session on Windows 10 system on Sept. 13

The Markle Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library will host a class on Windows 10 on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m.

Adults who want to learn the basics of Microsoft’s newest computer operating system are invited to bring their own Windows 10 device and get hands-on experience with a librarian’s guidance.

IRS warns public of new phishing scheme

The Internal Revenue Service is warning people to avoid a new phishing scheme that impersonates the IRS and the FBI as part of a ransomware scam to take computer data hostage.

The scam email uses the emblems of both the IRS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It tries to entice users to select a “here” link to download a fake FBI questionnaire. Instead, the link downloads a certain type of malware called ransomware that prevents users from accessing data stored on their device unless they pay money to the scammers.

The 3-D picture, made entirely of leather, features a fish jumping out of the water, aiming for a lure. It was one of more than 70 entries in the leathercraft division at the state fair. Last year, Waters won reserve champion in the state fair’s leathercraft division for a leather sculpture she entered. Waters does custom work from her shop, Donna’s Leather.

Humane Society to sell kringles

The Huntington County Humane Society is holding a Racine Danish Kringles sale to raise funds for the care of the displaced cats and dogs at the Huntington County Humane Shelter.

In addition to kringles, items available to order include cheesecake, cinnamon buns, fudge brownies, pizza, coffee and more.

To view a catalogue and fill out an order form, visit the humane shelter, located at 390 Thurman Poe Way, Huntington.

Payment is due at the time of ordering. Checks should be made payable to Huntington County Humane Society.
