A covered bridge crosses the Wabash River at Etna Road in this photo taken about 1900. The photo is taken looking east, and visible at left is the Coon and Coll Sawmill. The area was also home to a cider mill, blacksmith shop and gristmill. This photo and other local artifacts can be seen at the Huntington County Historical Museum, 315 Court St., Huntington. Hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Recovery Works offers connection to treatment, life skills after conviction

Some inmates in the Huntington County Jail can now take advantage of treatment and counseling services designed to help them put their lives back together.

Recovery Works, a program provided locally by the Bowen Center, is designed for low-income people who have either served time for or face a felony offense.

Dedication set for new trail section

A dedication ceremony for Section 4 for of the Little River Trail, part of Huntington’s trail system, will be held on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at Erie Heritage Park at the south end of the Erie Rail Trail Bridge between State Street and Riverside Drive.

The community is invited to attend.

The trail’s Section 4 runs along Riverside Drive from the Erie Rail Trail Bridge to Jefferson Street.

Camden artist takes top spot in LAC regional show

A painting by Lisa Bliss Rush, of Camden, won the best of show award in the LaFontaine Arts Council’s Regional Art Show.

Rush’s award-winning piece is titled “Woodland Nymph.” The award was sponsored by First Federal Savings Bank.

Judge’s Awards went to Teri Fuller-O’Brien, of Huntington, for “Pluto & Prosperine” and to Brenda Ramseier, of Silver Lake, for “Proud.”

The Judge’s Awards were sponsored by DeLaney Hartburg Roth and Garrott LLC and McVoy Design Studio.

Huntington BBQ Festival to help meal ministry, SA food reserves

Family and friends of Brenda and Larry Rosen are pitching in to put on the first Huntington BBQ Festival on Aug. 19 to benefit the New Life Community Meal Ministry and The Salvation Army. Area residents can get their fill of barbecue this Saturday while helping provide food to their neighbors in need.

The Huntington BBQ Festival, featuring live music and a softball tournament in addition to the barbecue competition, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Parkview Huntington Hospital Show Arena on the Huntington County Fairgrounds.

Monetary proceeds will go to the New Life Community Meal Ministry,  while donated non-perishable food will go to The Salvation Army.

Short an IU Herbert Presidential Scholar

Huntington North High School graduate Alexandra Short has been chosen as a Herbert Presidential Scho-lar.

The Herbert Presidential Scholars Program offers a four-year renewable scholarship to Indiana high school students of exceptional achievement. Up to 70 incoming Indiana University freshmen are designated Herbert Presidential Scholars each year.

Short is the first honoree chosen for this award from Huntington North High School in the 13 years it has been in existence.

Huntington resident Young places in several classes at state fair llama show

Huntington resident Joe Young placed in several classes of the Indiana State Fair Open Llama and Alpaca Show.
His results are:

Adult Showmanship

Advanced Obstacle – seventh place.

Masters Obstacle – second place.

Pack Llama and Alpaca
Advanced, young pack llama advanced included – second place.
Masters – third place.

Public Relations Llama and Alpaca
Advanced – fifth place.
Masters – second place.

Kilander takes reserve champ at SF rabbit show

Huntington County 4-H’er Bryce Kilander, of Warren, took reserve champion for Best 6 Class at the 2017 Indiana State Fair 4-H Rabbit Show for his satin 6/8 doe.

Kilander also won reserve champion fryer in the meat rabbit classes.

Other exhibitors from Huntington County took numerous first-place awards for their rabbit projects.

Local Boy Scout Troop 130 does annual high adventure trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The scouts of Boy Scouts of America  Troop 130 traveled to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula July 15 to 22, for their annual high adventure trip.

Participants included scouts Evan Bostel, Jacob Bruce, Jacob Worsham, Breckin Hammel and Evan Meyer, and leaders Mike Cook, Jim Fettinger, Eric Bruce and Jeff Webb. The itinerary included hiking and camping in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, cycling on the scenic United States Bicycle Route 10 along the Lake Michigan shoreline and biking the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail near Traverse City, MI.

Huntington youth Covey earns pair of blues at State Fair cat show

Huntington County 4-H member Ben Covey earned two blue ribbons in the Indiana State Fair 4-H Cats Program.
