Leidigs shine at State Fair pygmy goat show

Two Huntington County 4-H’ers brought home top awards from the pygmy goat show at the Indiana State Fair.

Breanna Leidig had the grand champion doe and champion senior doe.

Alexis Leidig had the reserve champion junior doe.

Legion plans fund-raisers to benefit Corina Barton

American Legion Post 85, in Huntington, will host a day of fund-raisers on Saturday, Aug. 26, to benefit Corina Barton, daughter of former Post Commander R.W. Barton.

Barton has been diagnosed with cancer and has no insurance.

A benefit poker run will start at noon. Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon, with an entry fee charged per motorcycle. The poker run is hosted by Proud Souls MC of Huntington.

Tacos will be served from noon to 7 p.m. at the post, 1410 S. Jefferson St. in Huntington.

Into the river

An excavator digs down toward the Wabash River at the Etna Avenue bridge on Wednesday, Aug. 9, in preparation for installing an outlet that will allow stormwater from Etna Avenue to flow into the river. The work is part of a project to alleviate flooding in the area while widening the road and constructing a 10-foot-wide recreational path that will eventually tie in to the city’s trail system.

Mud bogs will return to Andrews on Aug. 19

It will be machine against mud when the Andrews Mud Bogs returns on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Trophies and prize money will be awarded to the drivers who get their vehicles the farthest through the mud pits, says Tom Wuensch of the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department, the sponsor of the annual event.

The mud bogs will be held in an empty lot at the west end of Terrel Street, in Andrews.

Cakes to be judged, auctioned at Roanoke festival

A cake contest and auction will be part of the 64th annual Roanoke Fall Festival.

This year’s festival theme is “There’s No Place Like Home.”

The contest and auction will be held during the festival on Saturday, Sept. 9.

There will be three divisions — Adult Division, Junior Division (ages 11 to 18), and Kids’ Division (ages 5 to 10).

Categories include Most Delicious, Best Decorated Festival Theme and Best Decorated General Theme (Baker’s Choice).

Prize money will be given for each category and division.

Andrews pantry open Thursday

The Shepherd’s Food Pantry in Andrews will hold a food distribution on Thursday, Aug. 17, between 10 a.m. and noon for Andrews and Dallas Township area residents.

The distribution will take place at 67 N. Snowden St., behind the town hall in Andrews.  

No appointment is necessary. Distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Set support group for parents and caregivers

Monthly sessions for parents of children 5 and younger will begin in September at St. Peter Lutheran School, in Huntington.

PEP, Parents Encouraging Parents, will provide a time for parents and caregivers to get together and enjoy social activities, share experiences and participate in discussions that help encourage families and provide support.

During that time, their children can play with other children their age in a supervised setting.
