Trio of county residents receive high honors from VFW

Three Huntington Coun-ty residents received leadership awards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, two of them national recognitions.

The National Firefighter of the Year was presented to Chad Taylor, of the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department. Taylor has been chief of the fire department for 11 years.

Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel received the VFW National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Stoffel is a two-term sheriff who has led county-wide campaigns against drugs, including synthetic marijuana and heroin.

Norwood wins GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute and GE announced this week that Roanoke resident Jami Jo Norwood is among 20 students who were awarded the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship.

This scholarship program, which just completed its seventh year, rewards students who embody the vision and values personified by President Reagan, including leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship.

Library sets city walking tour, photo transfer craft

The Huntington City-Township Public Library’s summer library program continues with two events.

In keeping with this year’s summer library program theme, “Build a Better World,” the Huntington branch will host a Huntington Walking Tour on Saturday, July 15.

Starting shortly after the library closes at 5 p.m., the walk will be led by Huntington Alert and will feature stops that highlight history of buildings throughout downtown and the surrounding residential areas.

Vacation Bible school opens July 16 at Awakening

The Awakening Community Church invites children to “Maker Fun Factory VBS: Created by God, Built for a Purpose” From July 16 to July 19.

The VBS is for kids from preschool to those who have just completed fifth grade. It will run July 16 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and July 17 through July 19 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A meal for kids will be served each night at 5:30 p.m. before VBS.

Astronaut-themed VBS set at Christian Life Tabernacle

Christian Life Tabernacle will host World Changers vacation Bible school July 26 through July 28, with sessions from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. nightly.

The vacation Bible school theme is World Changers School for Astronauts.

Dinner will be provided every night.

Pair of new priests settling into Huntington

Rev. Tony Steinacker and Rev. Maicaal “Mike” Lobo are settling in to Huntington.

For Steinacker, who grew up in the Fort Wayne area, it’s not too far from home.

For Lobo, though, home is Bantwal, India, and he’s looking forward to getting acquainted with northeast Indiana.

“I’ve always heard great things about America,” Lobo says.

Together, the men will provide leadership to SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Huntington, with Steinacker serving as pastor and Lobo as parochial vicar.

Huntington Baptist to host Adam’s Road concert

Huntington Baptist Church will host the Adam’s Road ministry on Sunday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the community.

Adam’s Road is a musical ministry team made up of four individuals brought into a personal relationship with Jesus.

Three of the four members of Adam’s Road were at one time missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Huntington Baptist Church is located at 2435 Waterworks Rd., Huntington, next to Riverview Middle School.

BBBS to host get-acquainted party with free food, music and drink

Anyone interested in learning more about the Big Brothers Big Sisters program is invited to attend a no-pressure event with free food, free drinks and free entertainment on Thursday, July 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Berg Ale Haus, in Huntington.

The “BIG Berg Event” is hosted by Andy Eckert, a member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters ambassadors committee for Huntington County and coordinator of special events for the organization.

Guests will be entertained by Hannah Schaefer, a Christian pop artist from Columbia City now living and working in Nashville, TN.

Program focuses on roles of women in Civil War

Civil War historian Julie Duvall will enumerate women’s contributions during the Civil War in a program to be presented July 19 at the Huntington County Historical Museum.

Julie Reese Duvall will present a program on women in the Civil War Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. at the Huntington County Historical Museum.

Duvall is a Civil War enthusiast, re-enactor and living historian. She has written articles for Civil War publications and is a regular speaker at local, regional and national conferences, including the Society of Civil War Surgeons National Conference and the Midwest Civil War Civilian National Conference, the Lincoln Museum and Old Fort Wayne.

She is past president of the 44th Indiana Civil War Historical Association.

New show to open in Roanoke

The exhibit “Printmaking and More,” featuring Stephanie Carpenter, Betty Fishman, Alan Larkin and Barbara Nohinek, will open Saturday, July 22, at Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery, in Roanoke.

An artist reception for Tim Brumbeloe Photography will be held July 22 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the gallery.

The show runs through Aug. 28.

There will also be art featuring automobiles on July 22, in conjunction with the “Rolling into Roanoke” event.
