Schmidt joins NorthStar Co-op

Tim Schmidt, of Warren, has joined NorthStar Cooperative Inc. as a dairy herd information specialist.

He will collect milk samples, process dairy herd information and assist dairy producers in Allen, Whitley, Cass, Madison, Kosciusko, Porter and Lake counties to make effective use of dairy herd improvement records and reports.

Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Science in animal agribusiness from Purdue University. He has worked in the agriculture industry for more than 15 years and in consultative business sales for more than 12 years.

Grants open to those with interest in public safety

The Indiana Homeland Security Foundation is accepting applications for the Secure Indiana Scholarship, which offers funds to Indiana students pursuing a career in public safety.

Full-time students are eligible for $2,000 and part-time students are eligible for $1,000.

The students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, currently volunteer for a public safety organization and must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited Indiana college.

Speed reduced on Etna Avenue

A car passes one of the new speed limit signs on Etna Avenue on Thursday, June 22, that drops the speed from Gardendale Avenue to Waterworks Road to 20 miles per hour. The signs were installed earlier in the week and will remain in place until the fall of 2018, when construction on the Etna Avenue Improvement Project is expected to conclude. The speed was lowered in the interests of safety due to the presence of construction workers and equipment working on the project, said Chad Hacker, chief of the Huntington Police Department.

Entries now open for LAC Regional Art Exhibit

Entry forms are now available for the LaFontaine Arts Council’s 2017 Regional Art Exhibit.

The exhibit is held annually in the Wilson Gallery at of Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington University.

Veterans Memorial now bears the names of World War II dead

Three plaques memorializing the 95 Huntington County men who died during World War II were unveiled Friday, June 16, at the Veterans Memorial at Memorial Park, in Huntington.

The plaques have been affixed to a cement ledge that encircles the plane at the center of the memorial. A plaque honoring local men who died in World War I had previously been added to the memorial.

Splash on the Wabash to drift on down the river on July 8

Splash on the Wabash, a one-day festival highlighting Huntington’s Wabash River, will be held July 8 at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park, 3011 W. Park Drive, Huntington.

The featured event is a lazy river ride down the Wabash River on an inner tube. The float lasts 60 to 90 minutes, with three launch times to choose from — 10 a.m., noon or 2 p.m.

Participants can bring their own heavy duty river tube and life jacket or rent a tube. Life jackets are required, and the float is limited to those 8 years and older.

The event’s attendees walked around the track for 22 minutes. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Stop 22 program.

HNHS Class of ’77 seeks contact info for members

The Huntington North High School Class of 1977 is planning its 40-year reunion for Aug. 12 at the Cottage Event Center, in Roanoke.

Reunion organizers have been unable to contact a large number of class members. Anyone with contact information is asked to call Ann Flora Etter at 224-8405.

Missing class members are Teena Moon, Pam Yordy, Mike Rugg, Sally Miller, Susan Long, Robin Schofield, Sheryl McHenry, Linda Campbell, Lori Gerz and Eddy Alwine.
