Mississinewa Lake to host fireworks and music

Visitors can watch fireworks by lake or by land at Mississinewa Lake’s Fireworks Over the Mighty Mississinewa on June 24.

The show starts at dusk. It debuted in 2016, and support from private donations made it possible to repeat the show in 2017.

Guests can set up lawn chairs and blankets to view the fireworks from the beach. Country music band The Mountain

Dewe Boys will perform on the beach to kick off the celebration at 6:30 p.m.

Salamonie’s raptors to be featured at Summit Lake

The Salamonie Lake Raptor Center will take its birds on the road for a program at Summit Lake State Park, in New Castle, on Friday, June 23. The event runs from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Summit’s Harvey Shelter.

Visitors can learn what an Eastern screech owl sounds like, look into the eyes of a red-tailed hawk and discover how these birds of prey contribute to the environment. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The standard per-vehicle gate fee is charged. The program is free, but donations will be accepted for bird care.

PHH guild gives scholarships to Eckert, Smart

Olivia Eckert and Miranda Smart have been awarded scholarships by the Parkview Huntington Hospital Guild.

Smart is a 2017 graduate of Huntington North High School with plans to enter Ball State University’s School of Nursing in the fall. She is the daughter of Todd and Laura Smart, of Huntington.

Eckert will be entering her final year in the nursing program at Ivy Tech Community College, Fort Wayne. Her goal is to become a registered nurse and continue her career at Parkview Huntington Hospital, where she works as a patient care tech.

Week-long VBS at Faith Community starts July 10

Faith Community Chu-rch of God will hold a vacation Bible school July 10  through July 14, with sessions from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each day.

Children age 3 through those who completed fifth grade in the spring of 2017 are invited to attend.

They will participate in SonSpark Labs, a discovery lab where children will sing songs, watch skits, create crafts and play games while discovering that God’s plan for everyone is Jesus.

The Heritage of Huntington, other UMMH facilities, change names to ‘Heritage Pointe’

The United Methodist Memorial Home has announced new names for the three facilities it operates.

They are Heritage Pointe of Warren, formerly known as simply Heritage Pointe; Heritage Pointe of Huntington, formerly known as Heritage of Huntington; and Heritage Pointe of Fort Wayne, formerly known as Heritage of Fort Wayne.

The three facilities are corporately known as Heritage Pointe Communities.

Friday, June 23 deadline for local Camp H.E.R.O.

Youth ages 8 to 13 have until Friday, June 23, to sign up for this summer’s Huntington Camp H.E.-R.O.

During camp, which runs July 10 through July 14, participants will meet area law enforcement personnel, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

They’ll learn how to stay safe while hearing about careers in public safety.

They’ll also learn that public safety personnel are regular people whose lives include families, hobbies and activities outside their jobs, says Huntington County Chief Deputy Chris Newton, who is coordinating the camp.

Theatre guild set to hold auditions for summer play

The Huntington Theatre Guild Act II will hold auditions June 21 and 22, for the summer’s production, “Grandma’s Attic: A Blast from the Past.”

The original production will be presented July 14 and 15. It was written by Deanna Albertson and will be co-directed by Albertson and Dave Dean.

Auditions will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Faith Community Church of God, 3615 N. Norwood Rd., Huntington. All ages are welcome.

June 20 is callout for Battle of Businesses

The Parkview Huntington Family YMCA will hold a callout session on June 20 for this year’s Battle of the Businesses.

The battle callout meeting is set for for Tuesday, June 20, at noon at the YMCA. Lunch will be provided. Reservations should be made  to Todd.Latta@ huntingtony.org.

The Battle of the Businesses is a fun way to be active, build workplace camaraderie and bring the community together in a friendly competition.

The Battle of the Businesses 2017 will run from Friday, Sept. 8, through Sunday, Sept. 17.

Forks Uncorked offers evening of wine, beer, food

Seven wineries, three cider companies and four breweries will be featured at the second Forks of the Wabash Uncorked, to be held on July 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park.

Guests will be entertained by live music from the Adam Strack Band. Attendance is limited to those 21 years and older. Those attending should bring lawn chairs.

The evening will feature wines from Country Heritage Winery, Easley Winery, Harmony Winery, Heagy Vineyards, Running Vines Winery, Two EE’s Winery and Whyte Horse Wineries.

Parents can enter their babies’ photos in RTL contest

Area families are invited to enter their baby’s photo to the 36th annual “People’s Choice” baby photo contest, sponsored by the Huntington Right to Life. Photos will be displayed, without identification, in the Right to Life booth located in the commercial tent during the Huntington County 4-H Fair, from July 22 through July 26, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Rules of the contest are:

• Baby must have been born during 2015, 2016 or 2017.

• Baby must be a resident of Huntington County.

• All voting must take place at the 4-H Fair booth.

Hart, Daugherty earn scholarships from Flint Springs Elementary

Huntington North High School 2017 graduates Haley Hart and Sam Daugherty have each been awarded a $500 scholarship from Flint Springs Elementary School.

Hart, the daughter of Jason and Taberly Hart, plans to attend Park University in North Carolina, where she will study business administration and marketing.

While at HNHS Hart received an academic honors diploma. She played tennis and managed the boys’ tennis and basketball teams. She was also a member of DECA. She volunteered at Love INC, Huntington JeFFFest and SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
