Andrews recognizes students for perfect attendance

Andrews Elementary School has announced its students with perfect attendance for the entire 2016-17 school year and for the fourth quarter of the school year.

Those having perfect attendance for the entire school year are Nevaeh Dolby, Joshua Lipp, Ryan Perdue, Talena Staggs, Brooke Beeks, Stephan Conner, Autumn Turner, Madeleine Stender and Calvin Turner.

Library programs focus on buildings and their stories

Children and teens can hear stories about Indiana landmark buildings and create their own structures in two events coming up at the Huntington and Markle branches of the Huntington City-Township Public Library.

Representatives from Indiana Landmarks will talk about the stories that buildings tell at the Huntington branch on Thursday, June 8, at 6 p.m. in a Stories Buildings Tell session. The session is free and geared toward adults.

Huntington University grad will lead kids’ music camp

The Children’s Choir of Huntington County will hold a summer music camp titled “A Night of Jazz” June 5 through June 9 at New Hope Church.

Ja’Shon Burks, a music education graduate from Huntington University, will direct the camp.

The five-day camp begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. with a performance on Thursday evening, June 8, for a Relay For Life dinner and a final concert for the general public on Friday evening, June 9.

The week will be filled with singing, choreography, games and crafts as well as a daily snack, swimming party and pizza party.

Roanoke Elementary School’s fourth-graders ended their study of famous Hoosiers by staging a Famous Hoosier Wax Museum, dressing in the character of the person they studied and telling that person’s story. Participants included (from left) Braylon Kahn as astronaut Gus Grissom, Leland Lewis as author Jim Davis, Kaitlyn Sparks as Olympic soccer athlete Alex Morgan and Caleb Foster as Col. Harland David Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Teusch and Baker earn top teacher accolades for HCCSC

The individual Huntington County Community School Corporation teachers of the year flank the corporation’s elementary and secondary teachers of the year, Emily Teusch (fifth from left) and Dan Baker (fifth from right) respectively. They were announced at the teacher recognition breakfast held Thursday, May 25, at Huntington North High School. When teachers gathered in the Huntington North High School cafeteria on May 25 for their annual breakfast, held every year the day after the last day of school, they were in for a surprise — not one, but two teachers were tapped for the  teacher of the year award.

Emily Teusch and Dan Baker have been named the Huntington County Community School Corporation’s 2017 teachers of the year.

Three locals graduate from E-ville

Three local students graduated from The University of Evansville during its 159th com- mencement, held Saturday, May 6, at the Ford Center in Evansville.

Local graduates are:

• Drew Hollman, of Huntington, an athletic training major, who received a Bachelor of Science degree.

• Madeline Mettler, of Huntington, an archaeology major, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Outdoor Survival Skills classes for youth begin June 13

Outdoor Survival Skills, a series of hands-on opportunities for youth in grades three through 12, will begin on June 13.

Youth will have the opportunity to learn about what to eat in the wild, how to start a fire, knife safety, drinkable water, outdoor cooking, locating and building shelter and more.

The workshops will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Larry and Joyce Keiffer Family Living Building at the Huntington County Fairgrounds.

The dates are June 13, July 11, Aug. 15, Sept. 12 and Oct. 10. There will be an optional overnight campout.

National Register now includes Memorial Park

Huntington officials recently learned that Memorial Park has been approved for listing on the National Register of Historical Places.

Memorial Park is the seventh historic district in the city to be listed on the National Register, alongside eight National Register sites and numerous local single sites and districts.

Memorial Park is on West Park Drive and covers approximately 45 acres, offering numerous recreational facilities.
