Walking to beat cancer

Crestview Middle School students take to the outdoor track Wednesday, May 18, in an all-school show of solidarity in support of finding a cure for cancer. Many of the students and staff wore purple shirts and raised $3,042.04 in donations to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The Huntington Relay for Life event will take place June 10, starting at noon, at Kriegbaum Field.

Town and Country Flowers earns FTD Quality Star Award for 2016

Town and Country Flowers, in Huntington, has earned the FTD Quality Star Award for its achievements in 2016.

The designation is bestowed on FTD florists who hand-craft and deliver floral arrangements with excellent quality throughout the year.

Rod and Jeannie Myers have owned Town and Country Flowers for 20 years. The shop at 2807 Theater Ave., Huntington, offers fresh flowers, plants, Carson wind chimes, candles, jewelry and angels.

Bob Straight Scholarship is awarded to Sam Daugherty to attend Ball State

Sam Daugherty is the recipient of the Bob Straight Scholarship awarded by the Weaver Popcorn Company.

This is the 24th year for the scholarship, given in the amount of $2,500 for four years, renewed each year based on maintaining grade requirements.

Daugherty is the son of Deborah and Chad Daugherty. He was selected on the basis of citizenship, academic accomplishments and leadership.

Daugherty was a member of the conference champion basketball team and the baseball team. He ranks sixth in the Huntington North High School senior class.

Shafer Garrett earns Heith Garner Volunteerism Scholarship

The Huntington County Community Foundation has announced that Shafer Garrett, of Huntington, is the recipient of the 2017 Heith Garner Volunteerism Scholarship to begin his studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Garrett, a graduating senior from Canterbury School, will be majoring in chemistry and business. He is the son of Paula and Robert Garrett Jr.

7 Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters celebrating jubilees

Seven members of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters are celebrating jubilees in 2017. Six will be honored with a Mass on May 24 at Archbishop Noll Memorial Chapel at Victory Noll.

Sister John Francis Radler, a native of Milwaukee, WI, will celebrate 80 years as a Victory Noll sister. Her ministry work has taken her to California, Indiana, Washington, DC, Arizona, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Honor Flight benefit ride

The Freedom Riders take off from Huntington’s Memorial Park for their third-annual benefit ride for Honor Flight Northeast Indiana on Saturday, May 20. Proceeds from the event will help pay to send area veterans to Washington, DC, to tour and reflect at the memorials.

Beginning farmer tour offered on May 23 to introduce how to get started in farming biz

Seven Sons Farm, near Roanoke, will host a Beginning Farmer Tour on Tuesday, May 23.

The tour is designed for those interested or just getting started in farming.

Forages and pasture management will be highlighted topics for the day, and guests will get to view and learn about the grass-fed beef, pork and egg production enterprises at this farm.  

The session will start at 9:30 a.m., so guests should plan to arrive for check-in at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided and the event should conclude around 3 p.m.

The Huntington County law firm of Bowers, Brewer, Garrett & Wiley LLP has announced the winners of its 2017 educational scholarships.

Nolan Betterly, Kayci Clark and Jami Norwood received scholarships to be used toward their continuing education.

Betterly is the son of Ken and Anne Betterly, of Huntington. He plans to major in tourism, hospitality and event management at Indiana University.
