Guests at Salamonie Lake on May 13 can experience forest bathing walks

Visitors can learn about the Japanese practice of “forest bathing” with Indiana’s only certified forest therapy guide at an event at Salamonie Lake on May 13.

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, is said to relax the body and mind and boost the immune system.

Forest bathing walks begin at Salamonie Interpretive Center and run from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A presentation runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. Participants in either walking session are invited to bring their own bag lunch to eat during the presentation.

CP Preschool visits Fun Farm for recent trip

College Park Preschool visited Derek and Ginny Holzinger’s Fun Farm on a recent field trip.

The children got to see several farm animals, including the pig that visited the classroom back in October.

When Red the pig visited the preschool he weighed 39 pounds; when the children visited the farm he weighed 140 pounds.

The children had a special treat with Clayton Holzinger serving his preschool friends. They petted all the farm animals with the help of Derek, Ginny, Jerry and Linda Holzinger.

Tree, fish orders due

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District’s spring tree sale orders are due by May 10. Fish sale orders are due by May 12.

Some of the tree varieties available are sugar maple, red maple, red oak, sweetgum, Norway spruce, river birch, pin oak, persimmon, tulip poplar, redbud, silky dogwood and sycamore.

Trees will be available for pickup on May 18.

Available fish include redear sunfish, bluegill, hybrid bluegill, channel catfish, fathead minnows and grass carp.

Fish will be available for pickup on May 17.

Local Miller’s opens new memory care unit

The ribbon was cut on a new memory care facility at Miller’s Merry Manor on Wednesday, April 27, the result of years of study on how to make life more manageable for those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other memory disorders.

Administrator Natalie McConnell says much of the change in the 20-bed unit focuses on the color palette, with different areas painted in colors that reflect the mood of the room and are designed to create emotional responses.

3 legislators highlight HU Foundation b’fast

The Huntington University Foundation breakfast on Wednesday, May 10, will feature U.S. Congressman Jim Banks, Indiana Sen. Andy Zay and Indiana Rep. Dan Leonard as they discuss highlights from the 2017 legislative session.

The breakfast will take place at the Habecker Dining Commons with breakfast beginning at 7:45 a.m., the program starting at 8 a.m. and concluding by 9 a.m.

The Foundation Breakfast is held on the second Wednesday of each month, October through May, and is open to the public.

Warren native to lead hymn festival at Warren United Church of Christ

Warren native Ted Gibboney will lead a hymn festival at the Warren United Church of Christ on Sunday, May 7, at 3 p.m.

Joined by local pianist Mary Sell, Gibboney will lead the singing of favorite hymns and some new hymns from around the world. Interspersed with the singing will be the presentation of organ-piano duets and solo organ selections played by Gibboney. Informal stories about the hymns, their history and use will be narrated by Rev. Scott Nedberg.

There will also be a time of informal singing by request.
