United Way awards $7,800 grant to preschool at Flint Springs Elementary

The United Way of Huntington County has awarded a $7,800 grant to Flint Springs Elementary Preschool.

The grant, made through the United Way’s Special Projects Committee, will be used for tuition assistance, instruction and materials for the preschool.

As part of its Community Investment Portfolio, the United Way has a goal of ensuring that each preschool student in Huntington County is ready to enter kindergarten.

The Huntington Schools Preschool is working toward certification in Paths to Quality, a voluntary statewide program to promote quality and trust.

Singers, dancers, actors and others invited to become part of Tri Kappa’s 16th Red Stocking Follies production

The 16th Tri Kappa Follies in May, “Canteen Capers,” has a USO theme. Potential participants can learn about the show and sign up for parts at the Meet the Director Party on Monday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the New Huntington Theater in downtown Huntington.

All singers, dancers, actors and even people with no specific skills are invited to become a part of Tri Kappa’s 16th Red Stocking Follies, “Canteen Capers.”

The show, featuring a USO theme, will be held May 4, 5 and 6. Potential cast members can sign up for a part during the traditional Meet the Director Party on Monday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the New Huntington Theater, 528 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

Red Cross to hold two blood drives

The American Red Cross is holding two blood donation events in Huntington County this April.

The community will have a chance to give blood on April 3 at Evangelical United Methodist Church, in Huntington, and April 12 at American Legion Post 160, in Roanoke. The first event will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. while the second will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Evangelical UMC is located at 1000 Flaxmill Rd. while American Legion Post 160 is at 1122 N. Main St.

Love INC says thank you; honors several with appreciation awards

Love In the Name of Christ — also known as Love INC — said thank you to its volunteers and area churches, organizations and businesses that support the ministry in Huntington County with a luncheon on Wednesday, March 29, at The Well Church, and presented three awards in appreciation of those who make life better for others.

Award recipients were Knights of Columbus Council 1014, Dave Walker and RuthAnn Price.

Genealogy Society to hear about cemetery symbols

Jeannie Regan-Dinius will present a program on cemetery symbols during the April 5 meeting of the Huntington County Genealogy Society.

The meeting, which is open to the community, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Indiana Room of the Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library.

The symbols and markings placed on cemetery stones reveal much information about the deceased and the family. The size, shape and documentation vary with religious groups, time period and location.

Healthy Steps fair returns to PHH

Healthy Steps, Parkview Huntington Hospital’s twice-a-year health and wellness fair, returns on Saturday, April 15.

Visitors can take advantage of free health screenings and services, receive reduced-cost lab tests and learn about medical conditions and healthy lifestyles. Imaging services will also be available.

The health fair will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the hospital, located at 2001 Stults Rd., Huntington.

HU breaks ground on new plant science production facility

Huntington University will break ground for its new Ware Plant Science Production Facility on April 20 at 3:45 p.m.

The 2,000-square-foot facility will be located at the Dowden Science Building on the HU campus.

It will be split into two zones to allow for both student instruction and research and production.

Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Ware, of Chapel Hill, NC, made a lead gift for the facility last fall in honor of Dr. Ware’s father, Dale Ware, a long-time Huntington County educator and a 1936 graduate of Huntington College.

Christ the King, 509 Community plan combined Easter services

Parishioners from Christ the King Episcopal Church, 1124 N. Jefferson St. Huntington, will meet Sunday, April 9, at 9:30 a.m. at the 509 Community, 509 E. State St., Huntington, for singing, scripture reading and blessing of palms.

The parishioners from both churches will then proceed from the 509 Community to Christ the King Episcopal Church for worship, which will include a dramatic reading of the passion story from the gospel according to Luke and a celebration of the Eucharist.

Faith Community Church offers affordable attire at ‘Prom Shop’

An Affordable Prom Shop, featuring both tuxes and dresses, will be open April 10 and 11 at Faith Community Church.

Both tuxes and dresses will be available for rent. More than half of the rental fee will be refunded if the attire is returned undamaged.

The shop will be open on Monday and Tuesday, April 10 and 11, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Additional hours may be available by appointment.

All attire is available on a first come, first served basis. There are limited quantities of various sizes.
