Trio emerge with crowns to rep Warren in festivals

Out of a group of 17 hopeful girls, three emerged with crowns Sunday, March 12, to represent Warren during the town’s 2017 festival season.

Sarah Jane Jones was chosen as the 2017 Miss Warren, while the town’s Junior Miss Warren title went to Sophia Tolen and the Little Miss Warren crown was awarded to Kendal Zavattaro.

The event took place at Warren Church of Christ, with pews filled by families and friends of the contestants, who modeled outfits, performed a sample of their talents and answered questions posed by emcee and former Miss Warren Hayley Haynes.

Citgo station’s ‘Spirit Pumps’ aims to raise funds for Lincoln ES

The Economart Citgo, at 1970 E. State St., in Huntington, has installed Spirit Pumps to help raise funds for Lincoln Elementary School.

Each month, a portion of sales from the Spirit Pumps will be donated to Lincoln Elementary School. The pumps, decorated in yellow and black, were installed on March 13 and will remain in place until May 8.

The school will use the donations to purchase new school supplies.

Metro Kiwanis honor pair of Riverview Middle School

The Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club has recognized Maggie Park and Matthew Schnepp as outstanding eighth graders from Riverview Middle School.

The students were honored by the Kiwanians on Feb. 27. They were selected for the award by the Riverview staff on the basis of their individual accomplishments and excellence in scholarship, citizenship, character building activities, extracurricular achievement and leadership.

Vet combo launches lawn management service

Dennis Newcomb is proud of his service as a U.S. Marine, and the tradition has passed down to his son, Kaylan Newcomb, who was officially discharged from the Marines March 10. It’s that service that has become the inspiration for the name of their new business, 2 Vets Lawn Management, a full-service company that has years of experience behind the name.

As Dennis Newcomb explains it, he began working for LML Estate Management in Fort Wayne, then six years ago he struck out on his own with D&S Lawn and Landscaping in Huntington.

Northwest kindergarten registration, orientation night is set for April 20

The Northwest Elementary School kindergarten registration and orientation night is Thursday, April 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school, located at 4524W-800N, Huntington.

Activities for children include a live animal show, bus ride, snack and meeting new friends.

Parents and guardians are asked to gather in the gym for an informational meeting while children are visiting the kindergarten classrooms. They are asked to bring a birth certificate, immunization record and Social Security number for each registered child.

Huntington library hailing ‘Tartan Day’ on April 8

The Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library will be celebrating Tartan Day on Saturday, April 8, with an afternoon full of Scottish-themed food and activities.

There will be performances by a bagpiper and tenor drummer at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., a showing of the Pixar film “Brave” at noon, Scottish folk tales at 2 p.m., and a variety of Scottish food for sampling and crafts for all ages from noon to 4 p.m. There will also be interactive displays on the various tartan patterns and clans, as well as Scottish words. The entire afternoon is for all ages.

Young artists at ArtsExpress can have hand in mural recreation

Young visitors to ArtsExpress on Saturday, March 18, can have a hand in creating a mural that recreates a well-known piece by Vincent van Gogh.

Each young artist will paint a 6-inch by 6-inch canvas with a small portion of “The Starry Night.” The 240 tiny canvases will then be put together to create a 10-foot by 6-foot mural that will be displayed in the community.

“They will be guided, but each of the canvases will have a different style, because it’s painted by a different person,” says Ann Richard, co-owner of Giggabuggy.

Gourmet Ramen w’shop on April 8

Teens will get to try their hand at spicing up ramen noodle soup, the staple college food. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, the Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library invites teens to a Gourmet Ramen workshop, as part of the Teens in the Kitchen program series.

Participants will learn how to turn a humble packet of ramen soup into a nutritious meal, including dessert. No cooking experience is necessary for those who wish to come.

Huntington University faculty, staff teaching free job search readiness workshops at LC

Huntington University faculty and staff have begun teaching free job search and career readiness workshops at the WorkOne Northeast career center at the Huntington County Community Learning Center, 2201 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

The arrangement is the first of its kind in the 11-county WorkOne Northeast system, where the workshops are typically taught by WorkOne staff.

Local Parkview president to discuss community health at HU breakfast

Juli Johnson, president of Parkview Huntington Hospital, will discuss community health and wellness during the Huntington University Foundation breakfast on April 12.

Johnson will discuss the hospital’s expanded focus — going beyond the physical health of community residents to address other aspects of well-being. Parkview Huntington is working to make appropriate resources available to help each individual and to encourage growth and collaboration of local organizations contributing to quality of life in Huntington County.
