Optimist Youth Appreciation awards go to HCS eighth grade students Godfroy and Mickley

The Huntington Optimist Club has presented its 2017 Youth Appreciation Awards to Huntington Catholic School eighth-graders Nicholas Mickley and Olivia Godfroy.

The club presents the awards each year to two students from each middle school in Huntington County and three students from Huntington North High School, basing the awards on the recipients’ outstanding dedication and service to their school, the community and its citizens.

New Hope sets public breakfast Sunday

New Hope United Brethren Church is having a breakfast open to the public on Sunday, Feb. 26, starting at 7:30 a.m.

The menu consists of biscuits and gravy, pancakes and omelets.

The breakfast is being sponsored by children and parents as a fund-raiser to help send the youth to summer church camp in Bellefontaine, OH.

A free will offering will be taken.

A service will follow at 9:30 a.m.

Lenten retreat, ‘Way of the Desert,’ offered at Victory Noll Center 3/23-26

Victory Noll Center is offering a silent, directed retreat during Lent designed to help participants deepen their relationship with Christ.

The four-day Way of the Desert begins March 23 at 4 p.m. and concludes March 26 at 3:30 p.m.

Directed retreats offer time to tend to the movement of God in one’s life. It is a time to go apart and listen, to draw close to Christ’s presence. This retreat focuses on silence, solitude and prayer. Participants may also take part in Centering Prayer and group Lectio Divina.

Local United Way to hold annual meeting March 9 at HC Community Learning Ctr.

The United Way of Huntington County Board of Directors will hold its 2017 annual meeting on March 9 at 7:30 a.m. at the Huntington County Community Learning Center, 2201 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

The board’s regular monthly meeting will follow the annual meeting.

The public is invited to attend to hear about United Way’s 60th year in the community. Information will also be shared at the Campaign Thank You Luncheon on March 22.

HCCSC to meet in executive session

The Huntington County Community School Corporation’s board of trustees will meet in executive session on Monday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Horace Mann Education Center.

The purpose of the meeting is in respect to an individual over whom the governing body has jurisdiction, with the subject being to receive information concerning the individual’s alleged misconduct.

Master gardeners discuss bee-keeping

The Huntington County Master Gardeners will hold a public forum on Wednesday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington City-Township Public Library’s Huntington Branch Conference Room.

Dan Juergens, a local business owner, will present a program on beekeeping.  Juergens started raising bees two years ago. He will share tips with individuals in the community interested in establishing beehives.

‘Paws to Read’ returns to HCTPL

The Huntington and Markle libraries will kick off this spring’s Paws to Read sessions in March.

The Huntington library will have sessions each Saturday morning, where children who are learning to read can practice, judgment free, with a registered therapy dog.

The Markle library’s sessions will be March 11 and 18, as well as April 1 and 22.

All sessions at both libraries require registration; call the Youth Services desk in Huntington at 356-0824 or the Information Desk at Markle at 758-3332 to register a child.

Workshop teaches INSPIRE website

The Huntington City-Township Public Library will host a workshop for those using the INSPIRE website Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at its Huntington branch.

All Indiana residents have access to INSPIRE, Indiana’s Virtual Online Library.

INSPIRE is a collection of online academic and other information resources, full-text magazine and journal articles, websites, pamphlets, images, almanacs, full-text historic newspapers, multimedia, library catalogs and more.

Huntington. library to host Daddy/Daughter Hair Fair

The Huntington City-Township Public Library will hold a Daddy/Daughter Hair Fair on Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at its Huntington branch.

All dads and daughters are invited, as well as moms and sons and anyone else who wants to learn more about styling their young child’s hair.

Basic hairstyles including ponytails, buns and braids will be covered and practiced. Hair care tips will be offered for a variety of hair types.

Registration is not required, but those who plan to attend must bring their own hairbrush as this is a workshop involving participation.

10 from county earn writing competition honors

Ten Huntington County students at Canterbury Middle and High School, in Fort Wayne, earned awards in the Scholastic Writing competition for northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

Those earning Gold Keys and advancing to the national competition were:

• Shafer Garrett, a senior from Huntington, for a personal essay/memoir, “My Community.” Garrett also won a Silver Key for a short story, “Dream-Trak.”

Two locals earn dean’s list at University of Kentucky

Two students from Huntington County were among a record number of students who earned a spot on the University of Kentucky dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester.

Erin Leigh Rethlake, of Huntington, a junior studying special education-moderate/severe disabilities and Kevin Frebel, of Roanoke, a freshman studying pre-mechanical engineering, were recognized for their outstanding performance.
