Comic book shop now has physical location

For years, Jason McIlrath dreamed of owning his own comic book shop.

Now, that dream is a reality.

McIlrath is the owner-operator of Corn Coast Comics in downtown Huntington. The shop caters to geek interests, with comic books, figurines, T-shirts and games among its offerings.
While the business opened its doors this past December, McIlrath notes that it has, in fact, been in existence for over a decade.

“I’ve been working on this for 15 years, actually,” he shares. “My business is 15 years old; it’s been online.

Right to Life invites supporters to put names on ad

Huntington County Right to Life will commemorate the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, on Jan. 22 with a newspaper ad containing the names of those who oppose the killing of the unborn.

Those who wish to be included in the ad may submit their names, along with a donation to help defray the cost of the ad, to the Right to Life office or at any participating church.

The RTL office is located at 34 E. Washington St., Huntington, and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

HCS announces second quarter honor roll students

Huntington Catholic School has announced the names of students who earned honor roll status for the second quarter of the 2016-17 school year.

They are:

All A’s

Third grade – Rayleigh Pearson.

Fourth grade – Penelope Harrell.

Seventh grade – Laura Hartmus and Joshua Plascencia.

Eighth grade – Grace Bryant, Olivia Godfroy, Lillian Holzinger and Chloe Shepperd.

All A’s and B’s

Third grade – Isaac Scheiber and Sabrina Woolard.

Ryan earns top New York Life awards

Huntington resident Ben Ryan has completed another fruitful year with New York Life Insurance Company.

Ryan once again earned membership in New York Life’s Executive Council. Members of the Executive Council are among the most successful of New York Life’s elite sales force of 12,000 licensed agents.

In addition to Executive Council, Ryan was named an Annuity Elite Champion, Life All Star and led all agents in Indiana in Life Case Rate for 2016.

More than 70 complete HCTPL Bicentennial Reading Program

The past year saw celebrations all over Indiana for the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 11. The Huntington City-Township Public Library Friends of the Library’s all ages Bicentennial Reading Program was successful, with hundreds participating and more than 70 who have completed the program so far by reading either 200 hours or 200 books.

Andrews students earn recognition for attendance

Andrews Elementary School has honored students who achieved perfect attendance during the second quarter of the 2016-17 school year.

Lancaster Elementary School has honored students who achieved perfect attendance during the second quarter of the 2016-17 school year.

Girl Scout cookies will go on sale this Friday

Girl Scout cookies go on sale locally this Friday, Jan. 13. Cookie sales will continue through March 15.

This year’s sale features eight varieties of cookies, including the new S’mores cookie, a crisp graham cookie double dipped in crème icing and finished with a chocolatey coating. Returning favorites include Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread, Caramel deLites, Lemonades and Thanks-A-Lot. All of the varieties freeze well.

Mossburg, Arthur to be featured in Jan. 15 Evensong concert at Trinity

Violinist Caleb Mossburg and pianist Hope Arthur will present an eclectic program of works for violin and piano during the January Evensong presentation at Trinity United Methodist Church, in Huntington.

The free concert will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. at the church, located at 530 Guilford St. An accessible entrance is located on the west side of the building.

Rock’s oldies rise again in Jan. 20 concert at Cottage Event Center

Guitarist Kenny Taylor and his combo, The SwingSet Quartet, will perform songs from the early days of rock and roll on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Cottage Event Center, in Roanoke.

The 7:30 p.m. show is a fund-raiser for Northeast Indiana Honor Flight and features Taylor’s son, Colin Taylor, on upright bass.

Taylor and his band will perform songs from artists including Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley & The Comets and Buddy Holly, as well as examples of “jump blues” music from which the rock genre evolved.

Local students on Ivy Tech dean’s list

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast, in Fort Wayne, has announced its fall 2016 dean’s list.

Dean’s list honors are awarded to degree seeking students who have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.50 in non-academic skills advancement courses with no D’s or F’s. The students must earn six or more Ivy Tech credits during the semester and at least 12 non-academic skills advance- ment credits during their course of study.

Breakfast will help fund well at Sierra Leone school

The Union Church Missions Board announces a breakfast fund-raiser set for Saturday, Jan. 21, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Union Church, located at 3688W-400N.

There will be pancakes, sausage, fruit, donuts, juice and coffee. There is no cost for the breakfast but the board is asking for a free will offering toward the Madina Village School Well Project.

Madina Village School is a rural primary school in Sierra Leone in West Africa and serves 330 elementary age students.
