Smaller piece of equipment bought recently has Hgtn. fire chief excited

Firefighter Brandon Bolinger (left) and Chief Tim Albertson stand in front of the Huntington Fire Department’s newest fire truck as they display the air masks now being used by Huntington firefighters. The masks have built-in thermal imaging cameras, allowing firefighters to search a room for heat sources that will indicate the location of a person or of flames. Previously, firefighters used hand-held thermal imaging cameras. The new equipment allows their hands to remain free to make a rescue or handle firefighting equipment.

The Huntington Fire Department put a new truck in service in late 2016, but it’s a smaller piece of equipment acquired at about the same time that has Chief Tim Albertson excited.

Fifteen of the firefighters are now using breathing masks that have built-in thermal imaging cameras. That means the firefighters can enter a smoke-filled room and scan it for sources of heat — coming from a person or a flame — and still have their hands free to handle equipment or make a rescue.
