HU seeks artists’ input on public art commission for Merillat lobby wall

Huntington University is seeking proposals for a public art commission for the inner lobby wall of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
Regional artists within 150 miles of Huntington University’s home campus and HU alumni nationwide are encouraged to submit proposals.

“We are looking specifically for a work of art that reflects the creative vitality and artistic expression of Huntington University’s visual and performing arts programs,” stated Rebecca Coffman, professor of art.

Swine Boosters set meet

The Huntington County Swine Boosters will meet Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Huntington County Courthouse Annex.

The agenda includes discussion of possible improvements for the 2017 Huntington County 4-H Fair.

Getting benches for buddies

Andrews Elementary School, the Andrews PTO and the Andrews Lions Club partnered in September to collect caps and lids to purchase a “buddy bench” for the playground. Enough caps were collected to make four  benches — two for the playgrounds at the school and two more for the Andrews Lions Ball Park.

Extension to offer class on childcare training

Huntington County Purdue Extension will offer a training session for childcare and preschool providers on Jan. 28, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Huntington County Courthouse Annex Building.

Purdue Extension educators from northeast Indiana will present workshops from the “I am Moving, I am Learning” curriculum. These research-based programs will allow participants to earn four hours of education towards their Paths to Quality certification. Programs focus on school readiness, increasing activity and movement, child development and healthy eating.

Sheets Museum to host movie night on Saturday

The Sheets Wildlife Museum, in rural Huntington, will host a movie night on Saturday, Nov. 26, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The National Geographic documentary, “Pandas: The Journey Home,” a 3D film, will be shown in the Jarrod Geiger Memorial Wildlife Theater.

Popcorn, cookies and soft drinks will be available.

Admission includes the film and admission to the Sheets Museum, which displays more than 100 animals and marine life harvested and preserved by Sumner B. Sheets.

The museum is located at 200 Safari Trail, Huntington.

Dodgeball champs

The Dynamite Dodgers won Roanoke Elementary School’s annual dodgeball tournament on Friday, Nov. 18. Huntington University participates in Operation Christmas Child recently

Huntington University participated in Operation Christmas Child this month by putting together Christmas gifts in a shoebox for children who otherwise would not receive any gifts at Christmas.

The project is coordinated through Samaritan’s Purse, which will distribute the shoeboxes to children across the world. HU’s Friesen Center for volunteer service hosted a party to wrap Christmas gifts on Nov. 9.

Karing for Kids again offers chance for community to help local children

Karing for Kids is again offering the community a way to give back this holiday season by providing Christmas gifts and essential items to local children.

The Angel Tree Project is under way, with trees “decorated” with angel-shaped tags listing items to purchase for youngsters, stationed at multiple locations in both Huntington and Wells counties.

Christmas mailing deadlines are closer than many realize

Christmas is just weeks away, and deadlines for mailing Christmas greetings and gifts are even closer.

The United States Postal Service has announced these deadlines for ensuring delivery of holiday cards and packages by Dec. 25.

• Mail sent to Air/Army Post Office, Fleet Post Office and Diplomatic Post Office (APO, FPO and DPO) addresses overseas — Nov. 25 for Space Available Mail; Dec. 2 for parcel Air Lift; Dec. 9 for Priority Mail and first class mail letters and cards; and Dec. 16 for Priority Mail Express Military Service.

HCCSC students top state ISTEP averages

Students in the Huntington County Community Schools topped state averages in both language arts and math, according to the results of the 2016 ISTEP+.

Those results were released Thursday, Nov. 17, by the Indiana Department of Education.

“Many of our elementaries have performed above the state average in both math and language arts,” says Chad Daugherty, the corporation’s assistant superintendent for instruction.

However, he notes, there are “some pockets” at Lincoln and Flint Springs elementary schools where students performed below the state average.

Huntington Street Dept. to be closed Nov. 24-25

The Huntington Street Department will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 24 and 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Residents with a normal Thursday trash pickup will have their trashed picked up starting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Residents with a Friday trash pickup day will have their trash picked up starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28.

All other trash pickup days will remain the same.
