Gethsemane Ministries to hold bazaar

Gethsemane Ministries will hold a holiday bazaar and bake sale Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church.

Pies, cakes and home-baked goods will be offered for sale, as well as fall and Christmas wreaths, crafts and Christmas decorations. Soup and sandwiches will be served for lunch.

The church is located at 2239 Hartman St., Huntington, off Swan Street.

LAC names models for fashion show

Six local women will model this season’s fashions at the LaFontaine Arts Council fund-raiser Fashions for the Arts.

The event is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park.

Stacy Wolfe, Nadine Piedmont, Tamara Weicht, Allie Holland, Julie Crain and Alexandra Short will showcase fashions from the Jefferson Pointe Chico’s store. The clothes will highlight the latest casual, career and holiday looks.

Trinity to serve free lunch

Trinity United Methodist Church, in Huntington, will offer free lunches for the community on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both days.

The public is welcome to share in a meal.

The church is located at 530 Guilford St., Huntington, at the corner of Market and Guilford streets.

Master gardeners to share details of variety of crafts

The Huntington County Master Gardeners will present “Potpourri,” a public forum, on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall at the Huntington County Fairgrounds.

The program will feature demonstrations by several master gardeners.

• Kay Lilie will demonstrate how to dry and make gourds into birdhouses. She will show methods of decorating the birdhouses using acrylic paints, leather die and natural products.

OLVM awards grant to women’s recovery home

Place of Grace has been selected as a recipient of a $25,000 grant from the John Joseph Sigstein Foundation.

The mission of Place of Grace is to provide a Christian-based therapeutic home with long-term recovery services to help women break their cycle of destructive behavior related to addiction, abuse and poverty.

Place of Grace will begin operating in Huntington at the beginning of 2017. At that time, they will be providing a safe, structured and encouraging environment that promotes healing and growth for the women residing in the home.

Roanoke names honor roll students for 1Q

Roanoke Elementary School has announced the names of students who earned honor roll status for the first quarter of the 2016-17 school year.

HNHS to honor area veterans during program on Nov. 11

Huntington North High School will honor area veterans during a Veterans Day program on Nov. 11 from 2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will feature performances by the HNHS choir as well as a veterans’ panel made up of three young veterans.

Veterans are invited to a hospitality room with refreshments at 3 p.m. The hospitality room is sponsored by Bippus State Bank.

The event is free of charge and open to the public, with a special invitation to veterans and active military personnel.

Those attending should enter the HNHS arena through Door 28.

Huntington North High School’s FFA horse judging team competed in the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH, on Oct. 19, placing eighth in reasons and 11th overall. In addition, team member Cora Hill placed 10th in individual reasons. The team qualified for the competition by finishing second overall at the Indiana state horse judging competition. Found drug paraphernalia should not be handled

These uncapped syringes and a spoon used in mixing drugs were found last week along West Park Drive near Memorial Park. With such discoveries becoming more frequent, police are warning residents not to touch drug-related items they find; instead, call police to pick them up.

Syringes, spoons and other drug-related paraphernalia found lying alongside the road should remain untouched, local law enforcement officials warn.

Anyone who finds such items should call a local police department, the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department or even 911, says Major Chris Newton, chief deputy with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department.

“Don’t mess with them,” Newton says. “We want you to call the police … We carry sharps containers, and we’ll come and pick them up.”

Hillside Shooting Sports opens new store, range

Hillside Shooting Spo-rts, in Roanoke, recently completed construction of a new gun store and indoor archery range of approximately 6,000 square feet.

The facility allows the shop, which opened in 2000, to expand its inventory of guns and accessories as well as add a full line of archery equipment in addition to establishing the range.
