Roanoke resident wins ski title

A Huntington County resident became a skiing champion earlier this year. Kris Scherer of Roanoke captured the gold medal during the NASTAR National competition in April in Snowmass, Colo. The NASTAR Nationals is the largest recreational ski racing event in the world. A skiing champion from Indiana is something that’s not seen that often. “That’s a mystery, especially when you go to nationals,” Scherer told The TAB during a recent telephone interview. “You’ve got people from all over there. They say, ‘I’m from here and this and that,’ then they ask where I’m from and I say Indiana.

Huntington native in top 10 of NHRA Top Fuel division

Huntington native Josh Hart sits in seventh place after six events in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing series. He is three points behind fifth place Antron Brown and 95 points behind Top Fuel series leader Steve Torrence. “We’ve had a little bit of a rough start this year, but we’re getting there,” Hart told The Huntington County Tab during a telephone interview earlier this season. So far this season, Hart won the Pep Boys NHRA All-Star Callout. The event took place during the 54th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.

Volunteers help to beautify downtown Roanoke

About 30 volunteers converged in Roanoke on Thursday afternoon to help beautify the downtown area. The volunteers – from Reusser Design and from the Roanoke Beautification Foundation – hung 60 potted plants from 30 light poles throughout the downtown area. “Each year Roanoke Beautification Foundation solicits donations from fans of Roanoke and uses that money to purchases flowers,” Foundation member John Nelson said. “We pay someone to water the flowers each morning for the entire summer.” The flowers generally arrive in May and stay up until mid-October.

Former columnist Donna Brown, 95, passes away

Former Huntington County TAB columnist Donna Brown passed away Monday, May 8, at River Terrace in Bluffton. She was 95. Mrs. Brown wrote news about her hometown of Markle for the TAB for 38 years. She also wrote for the Bluffton News Banner and the Advertiser. She retired from the TAB in November 2022. “We appreciate Donna’s love for her community and her desire to spread the good news of the town to others in the area,” TAB General Manager Joseph Slacian said. “She had many talents, and she enjoyed sharing that talent with others.” Mrs. Brown was born in Huntington on Sept.

Optimists honor top HN seniors

The top 25 seniors at Huntington North High School were honored Thursday afternoon by the Huntington Optimist Club. The Top 25 Luncheon took place at the Forks of the Wabash. In addition to the students being honored, their parents, school officials and Mayor Richard Strick were present. Optimist President Joy Koch welcomed those present. Following lunch, Strick offered words of encouragement and advice to the students. “Speaking on behalf of a lot of people in this room today, we love you and we are proud of you,” he told the students.

Ex-coach seeks change of venue

Attorneys for the former Huntington University cross country coach have filed a motion for a change of venue in his upcoming trial. The former coach, Nicholas Johnson, is facing charges of sexual battery, a Level 6 felony, and battery, a Class B misdemeanor. The charges stem from a civil lawsuit filed by two former athletes who allege Johnson sexually harassed them and injected them with an unknown substance. Johnson’s motion claims he is unable to receive a fair trial in Huntington County. “Mr.

Study shows need for new housing units

Some 2,110 households of all incomes are looking to move within and to Huntington County each year. If local communities take action and support new housing development, the county can expect to absorb 1,035 to 1,390 new housing units over the next five years. Those were the results of a study created through a partnership between the City of Huntington, Huntington County and the Community Foundation. The results were shared during a recent Housing Symposium.

Taylor Jordan crowned 2023 Miss Warren

Taylor Jordan was crowned Miss Warren during a pageant on April 23 at the Warren Church of Christ. Also crowned that day were Harper Brewer, Jr. Miss Warren, and Amelia Wilburn as Little Miss Warren. Taylor, 17, is the daughter of Tom and Kim Jordan. She is a senior at Huntington North High School and also received the Miss Congeniality honor. Taylor was sponsored by Creations by Jan. She is active in the community volunteering with her church, the Warren Boys & Girls Club, Heritage Pointe of Warren, and more.

Who is Jesse Matheny?

For about a dozen years, Huntington native Jesse Matheny would take the on-line test to try to secure a contestant spot on “Jeopardy.” His efforts paid off on April 26, when he appeared on the long-running, syndicated game show. Matheney won Wednesday night’s competition, earning $2.600  in prize money. He finished third on Thursday, earning another $1,000. “I have been a lifelong Jeopardy fan,” said Matheny, a Huntington County native. “There exists a home video of me dancing to the ‘Jeopardy Think Music’ when I was around 1 year old.
