Former sheriff’s criminal justice class a big hit in first year

Members of the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees learned that one class at the high school experienced a success this past school year, leading to doubling the number of students taking it next fall.

Former Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel, who now is the instructor of the criminal justice class, said he learned nearly as much as his students during his first class. Students previously attended a criminal justice class at Heartland Career Center in Wabash.

Roanoke council discusses utility department hirings

The Roanoke Town Council discussed hiring new employees for the utility department at its meeting on Tuesday, July 16.

While the board had already decided to authorize the hiring of one new utility employee, Councilman Ryan Carroll suggested that the board should consider sanctioning the hire of a second employee, too. As the utility department’s council liaison, Carroll noted that he had met with the department’s staff several times and left those meetings with the belief that the department’s workload was large enough to warrant the hire of two new employees.

Ivy Tech announces local classes

Ivy Tech Community College is offering on-site courses in Huntington and Wabash counties this fall.

Only 20 minutes apart, there are several course options that are close to home for students at the Huntington and Wabash county community learning centers.

Available classes include anatomy and physiology, automotive service, public speaking, writing, history, QMA, student success, mathematics, phlebotomy, psychology, soci-
ology and welding.

Waiting game now on referendum questions

County officials and Huntington County Community School Corporation administrators should know in about a week whether the two questions the school district wants to add to the November election ballot will be allowed to appear.

City council reviews possible historic sites

The Huntington Common Council reviewed a list of sites in Huntington that are candidates to receive local historic designations during its meeting on Tuesday, July 9.

The list of sites was compiled by Huntington Alert Inc., a local historic preservation group, and forwarded to the Huntington Historic Review Board, which is a governmental body that makes recommendations to council regarding the assignment of historic designations.

Huntington Alert’s list featured the following locations:

– Park at triangle of Gardendale Avenue and Maple Drive, 1546 Gardendale Ave.

Hiles campaign hosting free Fairies and Gnomes party

The Johnnie Hiles for Mayor campaign is hosting a Fairies and Gnomes party for families on Saturday, July 20, at the Terry R. Abbett Splash Park, in Huntington, from noon to 2 p.m.

The event, which is free, will feature face painting, games and crafts. Children are encouraged to come in costume.

The splash park is located at 1215 Etna Ave., Huntington.

Community Crossings grant program open to local governments

The Community Crossings grant program is open to all local governments in Indiana with road construction projects, reports State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington).

Created by the legislature in 2016, the Community Crossings Matching Grant program helps cities, counties and towns across the state improve their roads and bridges.

Projects including road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation and road reconstruction with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp work are eligible.

Andrews council gets update from DCD

The Andrews Town Council received an update from the Huntington Countywide Department of Community Development on its activities in town during council’s meeting on Monday, July 8.

Marla Stambazze, the department’s land use division/office coordinator, reported on the status of an abandoned house at 195 W. Jefferson St. and trailers in Antioch Mobile Home Park.

Huntington County Republicans caucus for city council candidate

The Huntington County Republican Party will hold a caucus to fill the ballot vacancy for 3rd District City Council in the upcoming November general election.

This vacancy was created due to the current candidate’s removal from the ballot.

Candidates must reside in the 3rd District, which includes precincts Huntington 1, Huntington 9 and Huntington 10.

The caucus will be held Thursday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington Township Fire Station, located at 1005 N. Broadway St.

Hiles, Strick to run as independents against Buzzard for Hgtn. mayor

Republican Larry Buzzard will face two opponents for the office of Huntington mayor in the municipal election this November.

Johnnie Hiles and Richard Strick have entered the race as independent candidates. July 1 was the deadline for independents to file petitions of nomination with the Huntington County Clerk’s Office, which verified petition signatures.

Hiles, 49, works as an addiction counselor at Premier Care, in Marion. She also works part time at Pathfinder Services. Strick, 35, is an associate director on the Love In the Name of Christ national staff.

Groups seeking plan commission members

 The Huntington County Commissioners and the Huntington Countywide Department of Community Development are seeking individuals that may be interested in serving on the Huntington County Plan Commission.

Applicants must live in the unincorporated area of the county and outside any incorporated jurisdiction.

The applicants cannot currently be elected or appointed to any office and must reside and own property in the unincorporated area. Plan Commission appointment is filling the remainder of the vacancy term. After that date, the terms are reappointed for four years.

Local SWCD to meet July 9 at district office

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the district office, located at 2040 Riverfork Drive, Huntington.

The meeting is open to the public.

Special meeting for Markle council

The Markle Town Council will conduct a special meeting on Tuesday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Markle Town Hall, 197 E. Morse St., Markle.

The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a budget workshop for the 2020 budget, among other possible items.

Roanoke takes away dumpsters from town hall lot

The Roanoke Town Council voted to have dumpsters removed from the town hall parking lot at its meeting on Tuesday, July 2.

FSA extends prevented plant crop reporting deadline to July 15

The United States  Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) is extending the prevented plant crop-reporting deadline for Indiana producers affected by spring flooding and excessive moisture.

Producers without crop insurance or NAP coverage in Indiana now have until July 15 to report acres they intended to plant this spring but could not due to weather conditions. The new deadline coincides with the July 15 FSA crop acreage reporting deadline that is already in place.
