INDOT announces part of Ind.-218 in county to close starting Tuesday

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that Ind.-218, between CR S500W and CR S450W in Huntington County, is scheduled to close on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 2, while the county works on underground pipes.

The official state detour is SR 9 to SR 124 to SR 5 to I-69.

The work is anticipated to be completed by 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, weather permitting.

Grant could help cover paving costs in Andrews

The Andrews Town Council discussed the final steps in applying for a grant that will help fund street repaving in town during its meeting on Monday, July 25.

The board talked about submitting two documents to the state the following day, Tuesday, July 26, that would complete the application process for a Community Crossings matching grant. One document lists the streets the town would like to repave, along with the projected cost, while the other states that the town has the requisite funds to finance half the project.

Dogs and BMXers will have new places to play

A BMX track, a dog park and an expanded disc golf course are just a few of the improvements coming to Huntington’s parks.

Those projects and more will be paid for with surplus funds in the city’s Parks and Recreation Department budget, after City Services Superintendent Bob Caley received approval from the Huntington Common Council on Tuesday, July 26, to spend the $150,000.

Spending the $150,000 will leave the department with $12,505 in surplus funds, Caley noted.

All of the work should be done this fall, Caley said.

Markle to do two road reconstruction projects

The Markle Town Council decided Wednesday, July 20, to pursue road reconstruction projects on Novae Parkway and a section north of US-224.

Jay Stankiewicz, of engineering firm Jones Petrie Rafinski, said the town is applying for a 50/50 matching grant for the projects. The council will use tax increment funding for the town’s matching portion of the project, estimated at a total cost of $500,000.

Roanoke Town Council discusses preliminary 2017 budget figures

The Roanoke Town Council discussed the preliminary figures for the 2017 budget during their regular meeting on Tuesday, July 19.

JoAnne Kirchner, clerk/treasurer, presented changes to the budget estimate for 2016, based on what the town would need to best accommodate all departments for 2017.

Some of the proposed changes were a reduction in general funds from this year’s $477,001 to $471,695, an increase in the motor vehicle and highway funds from $700,549 to $738,220 and an increase in the park fund from $47,849 to $56,060.

County council orders tax overbilling be repaid

The Huntington County Council ordered that over $90,000 in tax overbillings be repaid at its meeting on Monday, July 18.

The largest repayments, totaling $40,393.62 and $20,568.12, went to Our Sunday Visitor and Life Church, respectively. The Knights of Columbus received $611.54.

The overbillings, which added up to $90,202.90, were the result of a taxing software malfunction.

School board approves hires of counselor, interim principal

Personnel items were close to the top of the list of the agenda voted on by members of the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees at their only July meeting held Monday, July 18.

Among both classified and certified employees joining and leaving the school corporation, the board unanimously approved the hiring of Megan Horsley as director of special services and Dawn Morgan as interim principal at Salamonie School.

Fighter Wing taking part in training in Slovakia

The Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing, based in Fort Wayne, announced on Tuesday, July 19, that it has deployed eight A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and approximately 140 airmen in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve for a month-long combined training event, overseas, to Sliač Air Base, Slovakia.

These airmen will conduct training and familiarization events alongside state partner and NATO ally Slovakia.  

Four seats up for election this fall on HCCSC board of trustees

Four seats on the Huntington County Community School Corporation board of trustees are up for election this fall.

The school board election is nonpartisan, meaning candidates do not run as a member of a political party.

However, candidates must be registered to vote in and reside in the district they seek to represent, and must be at least 21 years old. Teachers and other HCCSC employees are not eligible to serve on the school board.

HCCSC board to meet in two executive sessions today, July 18

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees will meet in two executive sessions today, Monday, July 18, to discuss collective bargaining issues.

The first executive session will take place at 5:30 p.m., before the regular 7 p.m. school board meeting. The second executive session is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m., after the conclusion of the regular meeting.

The public may not attend executive session meetings. However, the regular meeting is open to the public.

INDOT announces details of several road projects in county

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced details of several road projects ongoing in Huntington County.

• Ind.-218 between CR 1000W and Ind.-105 is closed to replace a gas pipe. That work should be done in late July, weather permitting. Work began July 11.

• The Ind.-9 bridge over the Salamonie Reservoir, between Ind.-124 and CR 550S, is closed to allow for the installation of a bridge deck overlay. The bridge is expected to reopen in late October. Work began July 11.
