Huntington County Rescue, an emergency response group that has been in operation since the 1970s, officially disbanded on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
The group was started by the late LeMoine Drabenstot, a veteran of the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, who saw a need for faster and more efficient emergency response in Huntington County.
The group, which was operated by a team of volunteers, was most recently headed by Shannon Hartman, who served as director for one month and deputy director for ten months, after a five-year membership with the rescue team.

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its next monthly meeting on Aug. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the District office.
The meeting is open to the public.
The district office is located at 2040 Riverfork Drive, Huntington.

The Huntington County Community School Corporation completed a long list of additions to its staff during a special meeting of the school board on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
Included in the list were Brad Ludlow, new assistant principal at Crestview Middle School and Rod Richison, dean of students at Huntington North High School.
Ludlow has worked in the Huntington schools in the past, most recently as principal of Salamonie School when it operated as a K-8 school.

The Huntington County Solid Waste Management District Board of Directors has rescheduled its regular August board meeting.
The meeting will now be held on Monday, Aug. 13, at 8 a.m., in the Commissioner's Room at the Huntington County Courthouse.

The Andrews Town Council held an administrative meeting on July 26.
The council discussed health insurance coverage for town employees.
Clerk/Treasurer Bill Johnson says, "Today I wanted to give them [council] information."
The town is addressing complaints the council and clerk's office have received about the current plan.
President John Harshbarger says the goal is to "select a plan that will work for everybody most of the time."
The council will study options for change and revisit the issue at the monthly meeting of council in August.

The Huntington County Commissioners have set three executive sessions to receive information about and interview prospective employees.
Sessions will be held on Monday, July 30, at 10 a.m.; Monday, Aug. 6, at 8 a.m.; and Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 2:30 p.m.
All meetings will be held in the commissioners' office, located on the first floor of the Huntington County Courthouse.
Executive sessions are closed to the public.

A project to change the numbers on exits and mileposts along I-69 in central and northern Indiana will begin in August, the Indiana Department of Transportation has announced.
The new numbers will reflect an extension of I-69 from Indianapolis to Evansville.
A 65-mile section between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center is scheduled to open late this year, with a 27-mile section from Crane to Bloomington set to open in 2014.

Filing is now open for the four open school board districts in Huntington County.
The open districts are District 1, 4, 6, and 7.
As of July 26, only one district has seen a filing, J. Ryan Wall for District 7.
District 7 is currently represented by Rex Baxter.
The deadline for petitions to be submitted is Aug. 24 at noon.
School board elections will be held in November.

During a special meeting of the Andrews Town Council on Friday, July 20, council members voted on bids for the town's liability insurance.
President John Harshbarger made a motion to accept the bid from Mettler Insurance Agency, the company that has provided the town with liability insurance coverage for the past 55 years.
Councilman Ray Tackett seconded the motion, and Harshbarger and Tackett voted in favor of accepting the bid. Vice President Mike Rohler voted against accepting the bid from Mettler.

The Markle Town Council has scheduled two special meetings.
The council will meet on Tuesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. to discuss the reconstruction of Tracy St.
The council will meet again on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. to discuss the town budget.
Both meetings will be held at the Markle Fire Station, 150 W. Sparks St., Markle. Other items may also be brought up at either meeting.

The Huntington County Council took steps on Monday, July 23, to force local lodging facilities to pay overdue taxes and to allow the formation of a community corrections program.
Many lodging facilities have been reluctant to pay the innkeeper's tax, which was enacted in 1994 and is the sole source of income for the Huntington County Visitor and Convention Bureau, HCVB Director Tina Bobilya told council members.
"The Visitors Bureau has had a long-term problem with the innkeeper tax and the collection of it," Bobilya said.

A resurfacing project on Ind.-105, between Ind.-124 and US.-24, was set to begin today, July 23, the Indiana Department of Transportation says.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of August, weather permitting.
Through traffic will be permitted under the direction of flaggers, with intermittent single-lane traffic in alternating directions.
The $464,000 project is being done by Brooks Construction.

A committee of the Huntington Common Council will meet today, Monday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the feasibility and costs to the city of Huntington in becoming a quiet zone for railroad horns.
The meeting will be held in the council chambers on the third floor of the City Building, 300 Cherry St., Huntington.

The Huntington County Board of Zoning Appeals will meet on Tuesday, July 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the GAR Room on the second floor of the Huntington County Courthouse.
The six items on the agenda include:
• A request by Jack Conley for special exception to place a manufactured home on property at 1535 E. Taylor St.
• A request by Robert King for a 160-foot variance from the 200-foot road frontage requirement on property at 7088W-500N, Huntington.
