Commissioners sign emergency proclamation to ban fireworks use until July 6

The Huntington County Commissioners on Friday, June 29, signed a state of emergency proclamation banning the use of fireworks until July 6.

Huntington City and the towns of Warren and Roanoke have postponed their fireworks shows until further notice.

"As dry as it is, we were very conccerned about this," noted Commissioners President Tom Wall.

 

Commissioners extend burn ban to July 2

The Huntington County Commissioners have extended the ban on burning in Huntington County to Monday, July 2, when it will once again be re-evaluated.

State law provides that the use of fireworks by private individuals cannot be banned from June 29 to July 9, says Huntington Fire Marshal and County Commissioner Leon Hurlburt. However, he says he does have the ability to shut down or delay any public display of fireworks, most notably the annual July 4 show at Huntington North High School sponsored by American Legion Post 7, should he deem conditions unsafe.

'Shred It Day' tomorrow, Thursday, June 28

The Indiana State Police will join forces with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana (BBB) and 3Rivers Federal Credit Union in a "Shred It Day" to be held on Thursday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A mobile shredder will be provided by Iron Mountain Incorporated at the 3Rivers Federal Credit Union branch, located at 3750 E. Dupont Rd., Fort Wayne, for the public to bring unused or unwanted papers, credit cards or other materials containing personal information to be destroyed free of charge.

 

Middle, high school students will get iPads this fall

After a grueling discussion, concerns from the community and hesitations from a board member, the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board voted June 26 to approve the purchase of 3,051 iPad 3's for every HCCSC middle school and high school student for the 2012-13 school year.

Ryan Wall, associate director of informational technology at the Huntington County Courthouse, told the board he's concerned about the timing of the project.

Topp’s resignation further muddies county EMA situation

Brian Topp's resignation as head of the Huntington County Emergency Management Agency has served to make an already complicated situation a little more tangled.

Topp is actually interim director of the EMA, taking on that responsibility at the end of 2011 after the Huntington County Commissioners - without explanation - decided not to renew the contract of his boss, Brandon Taylor.

Engineering assistant gets new title, higher pay

Despite concerns by Councilman Greg Davis about a growing bureaucracy, the Huntington Common Council has preliminarily approved a plan to create a new position within the city's department of engineering services.

Effective Aug. 1, Art Ehinger, currently the director of engineering services, will become a consultant for the water pollution control and water utilities.

Transportation department starts work on Ind. -114 in Huntington Co.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has started maintenance projects on Ind.-114 in Huntington and Wabash counties.

A crew from E&B Paving is preparing to resurface the highway between Ind.-9 and U.S.-24. Through traffic will be permitted under the direction of flaggers, with single lane traffic in alternating directions. The project is scheduled for completion in October.

Dispatch board to meet

The Huntington County Public Safety Dispatch Board will be meeting on June 27 at noon.

The meeting will be held in the second floor conference room at the Huntington County Sheriff's Department.

Commissioners burn ban to be re-evaluated tomorrow, June 22

Continued dry weather has prompted the Huntington County Commissioners to institute a ban on burning throughout Huntington County, at least through Friday, June 22.

The seven-day ban will be re-evaluated on June 22.

The ban covers all of Huntington County, including cities and towns. Fires, including campfires, are also banned at Roush Lake.

Andrews council awards contracts for renovation

The Andrews Town Council held a special meeting on Monday, June 18, to review quotes for the Union Hall project.

Contracts were awarded to Wright's Electrical for the electrical work and Brockhaus Construction for the contracting.

The Union Hall project will include putting a handicap ramp in the facility, replacing some doors and having some outdoor electrical work done.

 

Local police depts. issue 231 seat belt citations

Officers of the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, Huntington Police Department and Warren Police Department issued a total of 231 seat belt citations during the state's annual "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, conducted May 18 through June 3.

Agencies also issued citations for other traffic related offenses such as speeding and license violations.

Following is a breakdown of arrests made and citations issued during the 2012 Click It or Ticket mobilization effort.

• Seatbelt Citations - 231.

• Child Restraint Citations - four.

Commissioners mulling local smoking ordinance

A statewide smoking ban will go into effect on July 1.

Because the ban was enacted through a state law, any fines collected from people convicted of violating the ban will go to the state - unless local governments enact their own laws.

That's the reasoning behind a no-smoking law presented by Joe Rakoczy, chief environmental sanitarian for Huntington County, to the Huntington County Commissioners.

Burning banned throughout Huntington County

Continued dry weather has prompted the Huntington County Commissioners to institute a ban on burning throughout Huntington County.

The ban takes effect on Friday, June 15, at 4 p.m. and is in effect for seven days. It will be re-evaluated on Friday, June 22.

The ban covers all of Huntington County, including cities and towns.

"We're trying to be proactive instead of reactive," explains Brian Topp, interim director of the Huntington County Emergency Management Agency.
