SWCD will take orders for fish through Oct. 14

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District office is sponsoring a fish sale, with orders due by Oct. 14.

Fish available include large mouth bass, redear sunfish, bluegill, hybrid bluegill, channel catfish, fathead minnows, northern jumbo, bullfrog tadpoles, koi and grass carp. The sale also includes water lilies and aquatic plants.

Deputy placed on leave

Lon Whitted has been placed on administrative leave from his job as Andrews deputy marshal until a criminal charge filed against him is resolved.

The Andrews Town Council took the action in a special meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22, voting to place Whitted on leave without pay. Council members said they would not take any further action until the case is resolved in court.

Board seeks community input on proposed school renovation projects

The Huntington County Community School Board is seeking public input on possible improvements at several Huntington County schools.

A public comment time will be held during the board's meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Administration Office, 1360 Warren Rd.

During the comment time, the public will have an opportunity to give input on facility improvements that are being considered by the board.

Local Guard members may be among those deployed to Iraq in January 2012

Huntington-based members of the Indiana Army National Guard could be headed to Iraq in January 2012.

The 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, headquartered at the Tyndall Armory in Indianapolis, has received an unofficial notification of the possible deployment of the brigade.

The brigade includes the Huntington-based Delta Company 1st 293rd Infantry.

No official alert or mobilization order has been issued, however.

Huntington County farmers get approval to join wetlands program

Farmers in Huntington County have now been approved to enlist 164.9 acres of wet farmland into the Natural Resources Conservation Service's Wetlands Reserve Program with the help of a Mississippi River Basin Initiative award.

The award was recently won by Little River Wetlands Project, The Nature Conservancy of Indiana and Loblolly Marsh.

Huntington County Board of Zoning Appeals has one item on agenda

The Huntington County Board of Zoning Appeals has just one item on its agenda for the Sept. 28 meeting.

JB Towers LLC, has requested a special exception to allow a cellular communications tower on the northeast corner of US.-24 and Ind.-105, Andrews. The property is zoned agricultural.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the GAR Room on the second floor of the Huntington County Courthouse.

 

Online tool for people to learn about elected officials

Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita has announced a new online tool allowing Hoosiers to generate and view the names and responsibilities of each of their elected officials across federal, state and local government.

"Who Are Your Elected Officials" is the first of its kind in the nation and supplies voters with a unique reference tool, accessing a comprehensive database showing the names, and in many cases contact information, of all federal, state, county and local officials elected to serve as well as their specific duties.

Sinkhole reveals a piece of history in Warren

After a sinkhole opened up on 2nd St., in Warren, an underground waterway was found beneath the streets. The waterway needs to be repaired and filled in, due to erosion of the walls, which are made of sandstone.

Three weeks ago, the Town of Warren was surprised by a piece of history that has been lying dormant for decades.

A small sinkhole cropped up on 2nd Street. Upon investigation, a deteriorating pre-existing waterway was found to be the cause.

"We started digging after we found the sinkhole and popped a manhole about 10 feet away from it," states Curt Day, utility manager. "That's when we found the underground waterway."
Day adds that there are still Warren residents alive who remember when the waterway was open.

Zanesville council approves extra spending on road

The Zanesville Town Council voted to spend an additional $2,000 on an upcoming road project during its meeting on Thursday, Sept. 16.

The additional funds will go toward milling and paving a greater distance of Old Ind.-303.

Council President Patsy Brock brought the increase before the council because more road can be repaired for not as much funding, since Brooks Construction will already be in town for the rest of the project.

Councilman John Schuhmacher agreed.

Markle budget for 2011 approved unanimously

The 2011 Bbudget for the town of Markle was unanimously approved Wednesday night, Sept. 15.

The council also decided how to fund the local match for the Tracy Street project, as well as heard from John McCabe regarding issues brought up at the August meeting by his neighbor.

According to meeting notes from Clerk-Treasurer Shelley Monticue, the proposed budget for Markle next year is roughly $1.4 million, including about $711,000 in the general fund.

Schools' budget down, but services wil stay high, superintendent says

Even with a decrease from last year of about $3.5 million in the school corporation’s advertised 2011 budget, Huntington County Community School Corporation Superintendent Tracey Shafer said he is comfortable with the corporation’s ability to continue to provide a high-class education to Huntington’s students.

The 2011 budget was adopted Monday night, Sept. 13, at the HCCSC Board of School Trustees meeting by a 5-2 vote.

Local GOP to caucus Sept. 23 to fill vacancy

Huntington County Republicans will hold a caucus on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 p.m. to fill a vacancy on the Huntington Township Advisory Board.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Kris Underwood. Anyone interested in applying to serve in that position must be a resident of Huntington Township and a Republican in good standing. A letter of intent must be submitted to Angie Garner, Huntington County Republican chairman, at 4339N-641W, Huntington, IN 46750 no later than Monday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
