BMV shut for MLK holiday

All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

All branches will resume regularly scheduled business hours Tuesday, Jan. 16.

School board keeps same organization, reviews upcoming challenges

The first order of business at the first Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees meeting of the year on Monday, Jan. 8, was to organize the board, officers and nominees for 2018. It was an easy task; virtually everyone retained their positions from the previous year.

Huntington council annexes land for possible Indiana Box expansion

The Huntington Common Council voted to annex a little over 20 acres of land to the city during its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The land is adjacent to Indiana Box, on 1200 Riverfork Drive. Bryn Keplinger, director of Community Development and Redevelopment, explained that he and the manufacturer had been in contact for about 18 months, discussing annexation that would enable the company to expand if it desired to. Prior to council’s action, growth was not possible as any new or expanded buildings would have crossed property lines and taxing districts.

Andrews council hears about charges filed for home invasion

Charges have been filed against two men for a home invasion that occurred in Andrews last June.

Town Marshal Austin Bullock reported the news to the Andrews Town Council during its meeting on Monday, Jan. 8. Bullock stated that Trevor D. Geyer, of Andrews, and Josyah A. Arquette, of Huntington, had each been charged with multiple felonies in relation to the crime by the Huntington County prosecutor’s office on Dec. 13 of last year. Geyer stands charged of armed burglary with a deadly weapon, robbery, auto theft and theft; Arquette stands charged of the same items, save for theft.

Huntington county clerk anticipates big election year in 2018 as filing starts Wednesday, Jan. 10

2018 is going to be a big election year in Huntington County, according to Huntington County Clerk Kittie Keiffer.

The official filing period for candidates wishing to run in the 2018 primary opens Jan. 10, and continues through Feb. 9. Those interested in running for office can obtain the necessary paperwork from the Huntington County Clerk’s Office

Primary Election Day is May 8, although voting will take place prior to that day in vote centers located around the county.

School board to meet in exec session tonight

The HCCSC Board of Trustees will meet in executive session tonight, Monday, Jan. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Horace Mann Education Center.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the assessment, design and implementation of school safety and security measures, plans and systems.

The organizational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. and the Board of Finance will meet at 7:15 p.m. 

Much to do for Indiana General Assembly despite short session, say lawmakers

While the Indiana General Assembly may meet in a shortened session that started Wednesday, Jan. 3, there is still a lot to be done in the few weeks it convenes, according to Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington), Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) and Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle).

Leonard says he expects the biggest issue of the session will be Sunday alcohol sales. Leonard cited a move last year by Ricker Oil Company, which remodeled two of its convenience stores to include a restaurant, thus qualifying to sell cold, carryout beer.

Set airport meeting sked for year

The Huntington Municipal Airport Board of Aviation Commissioners will meet in the airport’s terminal building at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates this year:

Jan. 15, Feb. 19, March 19, April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.

The Huntington Municipal Airport is located at 1365 Warren Rd., Huntington.

Long names Holdman chairman of tax committee

Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has named State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) chairman of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy.

Holdman will assume the duties of the chair immediately, replacing State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek), who is retiring from the Senate Jan. 2. In addition, Holdman will replace Hershman as a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, also effective immediately.
