Roanoke Town Council pays for new emergency services software

The Roanoke Town Council paid for new emergency services computer software at its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The board agreed to pay a bill for $11,461 to Spillman Technologies for the software. All public safety agencies in Huntington County are transitioning to the software, with towns chipping in 2.5 percent apiece toward the total cost of the software while Huntington City and Huntington County cover the majority of the cost.

Gov. Holcomb appoints Jamie Groves to fill last year of retiring Hakes’ term

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has announced Jamie M. Groves as his appointment to the Huntington County Circuit Court.

Groves will succeed Judge Thomas M. Hakes, who retires Dec. 31.

The appointment is for the remainder of Hakes’ term, which ends Dec. 31, 2018.

Groves currently serves as the chief deputy prosecutor in Huntington County. He has been with the Huntington County Prosecutor’s Office for the past 20 years and has served as its chief deputy for the past 10 years.

Etna Avenue project soon wrapping until spring

A recent letter sent to property owners and residents outlines the upcoming work schedule for the Etna Avenue construction that has been ongoing between Jessup Street and the Wabash River on the city’s south side.

Contractor Phend & Brown, Inc. has set the following timeline:

• Now to Dec. 29 – Install the storm sewer main on the east side of Etna Avenue, from 200 feet south of Jessup Street to the end of the new storm sewer main (approximately 200 linear feet north of Jessup Street).

• Jan. 1 – No work.

Warren town office to be closed Dec. 22, 25, 26

The Town of Warren’s office will be closed on Dec. 22, 25 and 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday.

The office will also be closed on Dec. 29 and Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.

The holiday schedule for trash collection for those on town routes is Thursday, Dec. 28, for Christmas week and Thursday, Jan. 4, for New Year’s week.

To notify in case of a utility emergency such as power outage, water main break or other service emergency, call the Utility Garage number, 375-3424 and wait until it is transferred to the utility manager.

Roanoke Town Council dissolves park board

The Roanoke Town Council dissolved the town’s park board at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Council President Dave Tucker made the recommendation to disband the board, citing low membership, which routinely prevented it from functioning due to lack of a quorum.

Until a new park board can be formed, the town council will assume its responsibilities. Tucker noted that Park Employee Bob Scott and Park Liaison Ryan Smith would continue to serve in those roles.

Proposed cuts at middle schools have several upset at school board meeting

The gallery was once again full as anxious middle school teachers attended the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees meeting Monday, Dec. 18.

They wanted to know what was being planned, in light of news – and rumors – surrounding proposed cuts to the middle school teaching staff and adding more class periods.

County council to fund enclosure of rec yard at jail

The Huntington County Council voted to fund the enclosure of the recreational yard at the Huntington County Jail at its meeting on Monday, Dec. 18.

Tom Wall, president of the Huntington County Commissioners, and Scott Carnegie, of structural engineering firm DLZ, presented the lowest bid for the project to the board, which was a $347,488 proposal from Hamilton Builders.

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles closing down Dec. 23-26 for holiday

All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches will be closed Saturday, Dec. 23, through Tuesday, Dec. 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Branches will resume regularly-scheduled business hours on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

In addition, branches will be closed Saturday, Dec. 30, through Monday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

All branches will resume regularly-scheduled business hours beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Norwood meet moved

Due to a scheduling conflict, the regularly scheduled Norwood Regional Water and Sewer District meeting has been postponed until Saturday, Dec. 23, at 9 a.m. at the Andrews Town Hall.

Knowles announces for Hgtn. Twp. trustee

Huntington resident Carl Knowles has announced his intention to run for Huntington Township Trustee when current Trustee Tim Guy steps down after his term ends next year.

Knowles, a Republican, placed his hat in the ring after meeting with Guy several times and expressing his eagerness to “continue moving Huntington Township in the right direction.”

He cites being in printing management for 25 years among his qualifications for the job.
