Banks’ staff member to be at Ligonier, Huntertown sites

Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) has announced that a member of his staff will visit Ligonier and Huntertown on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to meet with local residents and assist Hoosiers experiencing problems with a federal agency.

The meetings will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the town hall at 301 S. Caven St., Ligonier, and from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the town hall at 15617 Lima Rd., Huntertown.
 

Local school administrators not happy with new grad pathways

The Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) has approved new graduation pathways for Indiana’s high school students, which are intended to give all students the skills and experiences they will need to take the next step in their educational journeys and to secure good jobs.

However, local school officials say the move is too hasty and hasn’t been fully thought out, especially in regard to how schools will pay for it.

Indiana Sen. Zay to meet with his constituents Dec. 22 at Nick’s Kitchen

Indiana Sen. Andy Zay will meet with constituents Friday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 a.m. at Nick’s Kitchen, in Huntington.

As part of his district tour, Zay will listen to concerns and priorities for his work in the Indiana Senate and share the latest updates for Indiana and Huntington County.

Nick’s Kitchen is located at 506 N. Jefferson St.

Huntington Common Council receives Porter/FMC update

The Huntington Common Council received an update on the cleanup process at the H.K. Porter/Friction Materials site at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Andy Maguire, on-scene coordinator with the Environmental Protection Agency, delivered the update to the board. Maguire reviewed the EPA’s activities at the site from July through October and previewed its agenda when work resumes in mid-January next year.

GOP to caucus twice on Dec. 20 to fill vacancies

The Huntington County Republican Party will be holding two caucuses on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Huntington Township Fire Station to fill two vacancies.

Precinct Committeemen from Precincts Dallas 1 and 2 will meet at 6:30 p.m. to fill the vacancy of Dallas Township Trustee Brenda Kitt, who will be resigning at the end of the year. Precinct Committeemen from Precincts 7, 7A and 8 will meet at 7 p.m. to fill the vacancy of City Council District 4, created by Councilwoman Erin Covey, who is moving out of the district.

State commissioners association elects Wall as group’s secretary

Huntington County Commissioner Tom Wall was elected 2018 Secretary of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners (IACC) during their recent annual conference.

As secretary, Wall will represent the elected county commissioners in the 92 counties of the state. The IACC is represented by six districts in the state. Wall will be secretary of the IACC’s Executive Board of Directors, which determines policies and legislative goals for the association.

Zay announces state senate now accepting applications for pages

State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) has announced the Indiana Senate is now accepting applications for the Senate Page Program.

This full-day interactive program gives students in grades six through 12 the opportunity to tour the Indiana Statehouse, observe session debates on the Senate floor and assist staff with age-appropriate tasks. Students will also meet with their state senator.

Roanoke Park closer to getting new pedestrian bridges

The installation of new pedestrian bridges at Roanoke Park is one step closer to happening, the Roanoke Town Council learned at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

The town’s supervisor of operations, Phil Hib-bert, announced that the town had received a $20,000 grant from the Huntington County Community Foundation for the project. The pursuit of the grant was a joint effort between the town and the Roanoke Beautification Foundation.

County council votes to add four more jailers at Hgtn. County Jail

Four jailers will be added to the staff of the Huntington County Jail, despite budgetary concerns expressed by two members of the Huntington County Council.

Councilman Shane Bickel had no such concerns.

“This involves human beings. This involves safety,” he told fellow council members during their meeting on Thursday, Nov. 30. “This is the most important priority we have right now.”

Sheriff Terry Stoffel and Jail Commander Jeff Kyle said hiring more jailers would allow for additional staff in the evenings and on the weekends.
