DNR grants will help stabilize banks of two rivers

A pair of grants awarded through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources — one to the City of Huntington, and one to a four-county commission — is designed to improve the stability of area river banks.

The grants, from the Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program of the DNR’s Fish and Wildlife Division, include $40,000 to the Upper Wabash River Basin Commission to help pay for an engineering feasibility study of the stability of the Wabash River banks in Adams, Jay, Huntington and Wells counties.

State DOT to begin chip sealing in Huntington County in coming days

The Indiana Department of Transportation will begin chip sealing several roads in Huntington County on or after Sept. 5, weather permitting.
Affected Huntington County roads are:

• Ind.-5, from .75 miles north of the east junction of Ind.-218 to U.S. 224.

• Ind.-105, between Ind.-9 and Ind.-124.

• Ind.-124, from Ind.-5 to Ind.-3.

• Ind.-218, from Ind.-15 in Wabash County to Ind.-9 in Huntington County.

Huntington Street Department to be closed for Labor Day holiday

The Huntington Street Department will be closed for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

Residents whose normal trash day is Monday will have their trash picked up starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5. All other trash pickup days will remain the same.

Orange sticker items with brush and limbs will be picked up on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Brown bags will be picked up on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Andrews to secure brush disposal property with fence in near future

The Andrews Town Council discussed securing town property used for brush disposal at its meeting on Monday, Aug. 28.

The property, located at the west end of Terrell Street, is utilized by both the town and public. While the town allows the public to deposit brush there, garbage has also been dumped at the site, which the town prohibits.

Board approves bonds for school renovations

A special hearing held during the Huntington County Community School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees meeting on Monday, Aug. 28, brought forth no public opinion about how the school corporation should fund the proposed renovation to school facilities, including equipment and technology improvements.

The board later adopted a project resolution to issue a $5 million general obligation bond, with additional capital projects fund money to go toward the projects.

Public hearing for proposed recycling fees set for Sept. 12

A public hearing on proposed fees for a curbside recycling program in the city of Huntington will be held on Sept. 12.

Those fees were introduced during the Aug. 29 meeting of the Huntington Common Council. They include both  the rate charged by the company that will pick up the recyclables as well as an administrative fee charged by the city.

The purpose of the administrative fee was questioned by council members Jack Slusser and Erin Covey.

“This is basically internal accounting that you’re looking at,” Mayor Brooks Fetters said.

BMV branches closed from Sept. 2-4

All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles bran-ches will be closed Saturday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 4, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Branches resume regularly scheduled business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

School board irons out details on both schools closing and reopening

In a public work session attended by few members of the public, the Huntington County Community School Board of School Trustees ironed out a lengthy list of decisions that will need to be made regarding the closings of two school buildings and the reopening of a third.

Board members expanded the list submitted by Superintendent Randy Harris, who said he had been adding to the document even after it had been printed. It included a total of 17 points after it was reviewed at the meeting.

Commissioners hold exec. session to discuss confidential records

The Huntington County Commissioners will hold an executive session on Monday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m.

The meeting will take place in the Commissioners’ Room 103A of the Huntington County Courthouse, located at 201 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss records classified as confidential by state or federal statute.

Executive sessions are closed to the public.

Applications being sought for open seat on Huntington library board

Applications are being sought for an open seat on the Huntington City-Township Public Library.

Applicants must have resided in the library district, which includes the City of Huntington, Huntington Township and the Town of Markle, for at least two years.

The appointee will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2020.

The library board meets on the third Monday of each month at 5:15 p.m.

The appointment will be made by the Huntington County Council.
