Bridge maintenance set for Ind.-5 near Ind.-16

Bridge maintenance is being performed on Ind.-5 just north of Ind.-16, the Indiana Department of Transportation has announced.

The project began June 26 and lane restrictions are expected to remain in place through mid-July, weather permitting.

The lane restrictions are scheduled to take place over Clear Creek, located between Ind.-16 and CR 700N near the City of Huntington, during daytime hours,

The contract was awarded to Pioneer Associates Inc. for $507,000 and also includes repairs on various structures throughout the Fort Wayne District.

Huntington Street Department closes for Independence Day

The Huntington Street Department will be closed Tuesday, July 4, for Independence Day.

Customers whose normal trash pickup day is Tuesday will have their trash picked up beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5. All other trash pickup days will remain the same.

Orange sticker items and brush and limbs will be picked up Monday, July 3. Brown bags will be picked up on Wednesday, July 5.

Hgtn. Common Council wrestles with upcoming landfill problems

Two sections of the Huntington Landfill are full and overdue for final closure.

The remainder of usable space at the landfill is filling rapidly, and the proximity of wells that provide water to the City of Huntington precludes any expansion.

The Huntington Common Council wrestled with those problems during its meeting on Tuesday, June 27, ultimately laying the groundwork for a bond issue to fund the permanent closing of those two sections of the landfill.

Jail revamp gets initial OK from county council

The Huntington County Council has given preliminary approval to a plan to enclose an outdoor recreation area at the Huntington County Jail — and, in the process, possibly give jail inmates the tools they need to turn their lives around.

During its meeting on Monday, June 26, council members gave Tom Wall, president of the Huntington County Commissioners, the OK to seek bids for the conversion of the jail recreation area, a project estimated to cost about $370,000.

Huntington Police Department promotes three

Three members of the Huntington Police Department — Sgt. Andy Ellet, Det. Capt. Cory Boxell and Capt. Shane Jones — received promotions during a ceremony on June 22. Three members of the Huntington Police Department received promotions during a ceremony on Thursday, June 22, in the Huntington City Building.

Sgt. Shane Jones was promoted to captain, Det. Sgt. Cory Boxell was promoted to detective captain and Det. Andy Ellet promoted to sergeant.

Jones is a 1991 graduate of Huntington North High School and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He began his law enforcement career with the Andrews Police Department in 1999 and joined the Huntington Police Department in 2002. He joined the HPD’s detective bureau in 2010.

BMV closes for July 4

All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches are closed Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Branches resume regularly scheduled business hours on Wednesday, July 5.

Roanoke TC fines resident for bldg. code violation

The Roanoke Town Council handed out a hefty fine to a resident for failing to resolve building code violations at her home during its meeting on Tuesday, June 20.

The board assessed Casandra Emley, the occupant of 775 Seminary St., with a $5,000 civil penalty for willful failure to comply with a continuing order of enforcement from the Huntington Countywide Department of Community Development (DCD) that details what needs to be corrected at her property, which she is buying on contract.

Markle Town Council awards Tracy Street contract to FW company

The Markle Town Council awarded a contract for improvements to Tracy Street to Brooks Construction Company, of Fort Wayne, at a total cost of $38,473.

The unanimous vote to accept Brooks’ bid was made at the council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, June 21.

The project covers the stretch of Tracy Street from U.S.-224 to CR 600W and will include repaving the roadway in front of Hare Canvas.

Leonard earns praise from Indiana Chamber

State Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington) earned a 100 percent on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s annual Legislative Vote Analysis for his support of pro-jobs, pro-economy legislation.

Leonard’s score is based on his performance during the 2017 session of the Indiana General Assembly and his votes cast in agreement with the Indiana Chamber’s position on certain bills, including measures on long-term road funding, ISTEP replacement and pre-K expansion for children from low-income families.

Seeking noms for county committees

County committees play a crucial role in helping the county office staff implement the Farm Bill. Due to the important services that COC members provide, producers are encouraged to participate in the FSA county committee election process by nominating an eligible candidate by the Aug. 1 deadline. This year LAA 2 (Clear Creek, Huntington, Lancaster and Jefferson) is up for election in Huntington County.
