Markle Council hires new deputy and two additional town employees

The Markle Town Council suspended the rules during a special meeting held Monday, April 3, and hired three individuals, bringing the town’s staff to eight.

The councilmen unanimously passed Ordinance 2017-5 to hire a deputy marshal, Jonathon Gray, and two general town assistants, Joe Collins and Mike Grant.

All three positions are full time and will start on Monday, April 10.

Gray will be paid an annual sum of $37,025 and an overtime rate of $26.70 per hour.

His addition brings the police force to one marshal and two deputies.

SWCD taking fish sale orders now

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for its spring fish sale.

Orders and payment are due to the district office by May 12.  Fish will be available for pickup on May 17.

Local SWCD sponsoring tree sale

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District office is sponsoring a spring tree sale.   

Some of the varieties available are sugar maple, red maple, red oak, sweetgum, Norway spruce, river birch, pin oak, persimmon, tulip poplar, redbud, silky dogwood and sycamore.

Order forms are available at the district office, 2040 Riverfork Drive, Huntington or online at www.huntingtonswcd.org.  

Tree orders and payment are due by May 10. Trees will be available for pickup on May 18.

Roanoke council discusses use agreement for pulling area at Roanoke Park

The Roanoke Town Council discussed a use agreement for the pulling and grandstand area at Roanoke Park during its meeting on Tuesday, April 4.

A request by Chris Hoffman, who is interested in using the area for a truck pull event, prompted the board’s compilation of an agreement, which would apply to all parties interested in using the area going forward.

Council determined that the usage fee for the area would be $750 per event, with a $100 charge to use the lights.

Democrats to meet on Wednesday

The Huntington County Democrat Party will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library.

Discussion topics will include contacting representatives, letters to the media and resistance.

The meeting is open to the public.

INDOT to resume I-69 bridge work this week

The Indiana Department of Transportation will resume work this week on replacement of two bridges on I-69.

The bridges are located over Flat Creek, in Huntington County, and over Eight Mile Creek, in Allen County.

Temporary bridges were constructed in the medians at both locations in 2016.

Contractors will begin constructing the northbound bridges at both locations today, Monday, April 3. Northbound traffic will be shifted to the temporary bridges. A construction zone speed limit of 55 miles per hour will be enforced.

New wells to track movement of underground TCE in Andrews

Additional testing wells are being drilled in Andrews to monitor the underground movement of a contaminant once used by a now-closed industry, members of the Andrews Town Council announced during their meeting on Monday, March 27.

The 10 new wells, prompted by the discovery of vapors from the contaminant in the basement of the Andrews Municipal Building, will join more than 100 testing wells already in place.

County council helps commissioners follow through on 2009 pledge

The Huntington County Council helped the county commissioners follow through on a monetary pledge they made to the City of Huntington’s Etna Avenue improvement project eight years ago during its meeting on Monday, March 27.

In 2009, the county commissioners committed $75,000 to storm drain improvements that would take place as part of the Etna Avenue project. The commissioners pledged that money as those improvements would see ditches regulated by the county make way for a drainage pipe.

Markle council learns VFW post closing

Perhaps the saddest news from the Markle Town Council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, March 22, was the announcement that the town is losing its Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

VFW Post 6671 Commander Larry Jenks made the announcement after Post Quartermaster Rick Waikel presented the council with two sets of flags for Veterans Park in downtown Markle.

INDOT to work on three county bridges

The Indiana Department of Transportation will be working on three bridges in Huntington County thr-ough mid-May.

Affected bridges are:

• Ind.-124 over the Salamonie River, 3.37 miles west of Ind.-5. Work will include bridge deck repair. Traffic will be directed by flaggers.

• U.S.-224 over the south fork of the Little River, 1.57 miles east of U.S.-24. Work will include bridge deck repair and joint replacement. Traffic will be directed by flaggers.
