Harper takes first Hula Hoop Contest

Ten-year-old Brooklyn Harper took first place in the Andrews Summer Festival Hula Hoop Contest on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Second place went to Jorri Booth, 8.

Both girls stopped only after everyone else dropped out.

The youngest hula hooper in the contest was Serenity Boggs, 8, who kept the hoop going tor 8.5 minutes.

The hula hoop contest drew 16 contestants and went three rounds. It was sponsored by Miller's Pub.

‘Teen Night@The Park’ kicks off reformatted Andrews festival Friday

A reformatted Andrews Summer Festival opens Friday evening, Aug. 16, with a special event for teens at the Andrews Park.

"We'll have a DJ there with music," says Ray Tackett, one of the festival's organizers. "If they want to dance, they can dance."

The DJ for the evening is Monte Sieberns, who grew up in Huntington and can be heard on Wabash radio station 105.9 The Bash.

"Teen Night@The Park" gets underway on Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. and continues through 9 p.m. at the Andrews Park. It's open to any age teen, Tackett says, and there's no admission charge.
