PHH, Christian Life take top two theme honors in HD parade

Parkview Huntington Hospital won the award for best theme float in the 2012 Heritage Days parade.
Christian Life Tabernacle had the second place theme float.

Both awards were sponsored by Matthew F. Capozza.
The parade was held on Saturday, June 23.

Winners in other categories were:

Best marching band - Mizpah Bagpipes, first; Mizpah Shrine band, second. Both awards were sponsored by Z-Place Pizza.

A flash mob gathered in downtown Huntington on Saturday, June 23, and members kicked up their heels in dance at the intersection of Jefferson and Washington streets. About 35 people gathered for the mob that was organized through social media.

Son joins father in ranks of Chiefs as Michael Zahn gets honor

In a first for Huntington, a son has joined his father in the ranks of the Chiefs of the Flint Springs Tribe.

But 2012 Chief Michael Zahn was definitely not riding on the coattails of his dad, a fact that was made clear by 2011 Chief Rose Wall.

"He is a teacher and a mentor," Wall said as she introduced Zahn during the annual Chief of the Flint Springs Tribe Breakfast Thursday, June 21, at the LaFontaine Golf Club. "He is exceedingly generous."

Chairman says Heritage Days to be more fun for more ages with this year’s diverse lineup

Heritage Days Chairman Joe Burgess hopes that the 2012 Heritage Days will be even more fun for even more ages this year.

"We really tried this year to make sure we had activities to cover all age groups," Burgess says.

 

South side history

This building on Riverside Drive, a former distillery, will be included in the Huntington County Historical Society's Heritage Days tour of the south side of Huntington. Tours are offered at three times - 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. - on Saturday, June 23. All tours leave from the Huntington County Historical Museum on Court Street, with tickets available at the museum.

Making plans for this year's Forks of the Wabash Chapter ABWA Brat Tent are (from left) Dianne Shaw, Brat Tent co-chairmen Ann Lesperance and Teresa Ray, Angie Rittenhouse and Vicki Pearson. The Heritage Days event, a fund-raiser for the chapter, will be held on Friday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday, June 23, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Huntington-based band Backwater will perform Friday beginning at 8:30 p.m., with Reckon from Fort Wayne providing the music on Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m.

Seeking Heritage Days pageant contestants

Contestants are being sought for the 2012 Little Miss and Junior Miss Heritage Days Pageant to be held Wednesday, June 13, at 7 p.m.

The pageant is open to all Huntington County girls ages 5 to 12. Deadline for entries and fees is Saturday, April 28. Orientation will also be held that Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lincoln Elementary.
