Huntington parks dept. taking team registration for fall softball

The Huntington Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting team registration for its fall co-ed softball league.

Each team will play 10 regular season games and a double elimination tournament. The league will begin play on Aug. 26 and all games will be played on Sunday afternoons.
There is an entry fee per team, which is due by Aug. 10.

Dale, Loe top ladies' invitational

There were strong showings by several Etna Acres members during the ladies' invitational at Etna Acres Golf Course on Thursday, July 19, that was attended by 50 ladies from 12 different clubs.

The best low gross actual score belonged to JoDee Dale from Etna Acres at 84. Sheila DeLongchamp of Marion Elks came in second with 87. Robin Peconge of Canterbury also shot an 87, but came in third. Jessica Pegg of Etna Acres came in sixth with a score of 91.

 

Etna Acres names top golfers in July 19 scramble

Linda Conner and Randy Musleman made the longest putt on the 14th hole at nine feet, ten inches in Scramble League action at Etna Acres Golf Course on Thursday, July 19.

On the back nine, Linda and Myron Ridgeway were closest to the hole on the 12th hole at two inches.

Brian Campbell and Gary Dale were closest to the hole on the 16th hole at 11 feet, two inches.

Diane and Steve Shoptaw matched Don and Gary Sweet for least putts made with 12. The Sweet duo also had a chip-in on the 10th hole.

 

HNHS cross country team invites runners to ‘get the juices flowing’

The Men In Black 5K Challenge will take place Saturday, July 28, at the Huntington University cross country course.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Huntington North High School boys' cross country team. There is no entry fee and the race is open to anyone.

Boys' cross country coach Curtis Hines says no awards will be issued and that the race is "just for the sake of getting competitive juices flowing."

Water will be provided for participants.

Huntington Parks & Recreation taking fall men’s softball apps

The Huntington Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting team registrations for its men's fall softball league.

The season starts on Aug. 14 and games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, at Hier's and Yeoman parks.

Each team will play 14 regular season games and participate in a double elimination tournament at the end of the season.

There is a cost per team and registration is due by Aug. 3.

Foursome's 31 wins July 17 scramble

The quartet of Paul Schroeter, Rex Kline, Phil Rebholz and Terry Harden came in first with a score of 31 at the Senior Men's Scramble at Etna Acres Golf Course on Tuesday, July 17.

There was a four-way tie for second with the teams of Jerry McVickor, Don Alexander, Ed Ulshafer and Ellis Rice, Jim DuBois, Ernie Peas, Wes Wingert and Al McCabe, Gary Shroyer, Jim Wheeley, John Douglas and Roy McCarty, and Sam Rumple, Harold Williams, Larry Stouffer and Steve McCammack finishing with matching scores of 32.

Intri-Cut, of Roanoke, won the title in the Clemente division of Huntington County Baseball. Intri-Cut lost to Moose Lodge, of Andrews, in the semi-finals on July 14 but came back to defeat Andrews twice on July 17 to win the championship. Scores of the championship games were 15-6 and 16-11.

 

Ninth annual Huntington Bicycle Challenge to be held Sept. 15

Bicyclists from across the Midwest are expected to participate in the ninth annual Huntington Bicycle Challenge on Sept. 15.

The cycling event is a fund-raiser organized by Pathfinder Services, Parkview Home Health and Hospice and 3 Rivers Velo Sport Bike Club.

Proceeds from this event will go to two causes - Pathfinder Services to assist teenagers with developmental disabilities with scholarships to attend summer camp and Parkview Home Health and Hospice's end-of-life care of the terminally ill.

Sean Lewis and Elaine Yahne were the top male and female finishers of the inaugural Men In Black Runway Mile Walk/Run on Friday, July 13, at the Huntington Municipal Airport.

Lewis, 19, of Huntington, posted a time of 4:32.5 to outrace the field. Yahne, also 19, of Huntington, clocked in at 5:56.1 to lead the female divisions.

Other top male finishers included Jacob Hall, of Huntington, who finished first in the 12 and under age group with a time of 6:47.4. Brett Krumanaker, of Huntington, placed third.

Myron Ridgeway, Larry Sprowl, Don Alexander and Mick Van AsDall were the champions of the Etna Acres Senior Men's Scramble at Etna Acres Golf Course on Tuesday, July 10, with a score of 29.

Bob Hoch, Bill Hewitt, Jim Kuhens and Gene Nimmo were the runners-up with a score of 30.

Jerry McVickor, Clyde Smith, Gerald Eckert and Rex Ziegler tied with Don Sweet, Al McCabe, John Jones and Roger Johnson for third with matching scores of 31.

Jim Young, Steve McCammack, Brad Crawford and Ed Ulshafer finished fourth.

Golf outing Aug. 25 for "By the Book" funds

The "By the Book" Weekly Religious Education Program will sponsor a fund-raising golf outing on Aug. 25 at Norwood Golf Club.

Registration begins at 7:15 a.m., with the Florida Scramble starting at 8 a.m. and lunch served at approximately 1 p.m.

There is a cost per person or foursome and space is limited to the first 36 teams.

Etna Acres lists scramble performances

Bob Hoch and Sam Rumple got closest to the hole on the 12th hole at 28 feet, 1 inch during Scramble League action at Etna Acres Golf Course on July 5, 2012.

Linda Conner and Randy Musleman were closest to the hole on the 16th hole at four feet, eight inches.

Jenny and Jim Morris made the longest putt on the 14th hole at 29 feet, six inches.

Don and Gary Sweet made the least putts with eight.

Chip-ins were sunk by Steve and Diane Shoptaw on the 16th hole, Don and Gary Sweet on the 15th and Pete Dupont and Dave Slingluff on the 12th.

Men in Black Running Club to host ‘Runway MileWalk/Run 2012’ at Huntington Municipal Airport

The Huntington Men in Black Running Club will host "Runway Mile Walk/Run 2012" on Friday, July 13, at the Huntington Municipal Airport.

Race day registration and race number pickup will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Runners will advance to the starting line between 7:30 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

The race starts at 8:15 p.m.

The awards ceremony will be held in the terminal/tarmac, from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and prizes will be awarded in several age groups, 12 and under, 13-19, 20-26, 27-32, 33-39, 40-46, 47-54 and 55 and over (masters).

The Indiana Shock 12U fast pitch softball team has qualified to compete in the Super State competition in Indianapolis the weekend of July 21. The team placed third in a regional qualifier played in Warsaw June 22-24, and the top three teams in each of the three regions qualified to compete in Indianapolis.

 

Tudor to serve 2nd year as Hall of Fame head

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announces the re-election of officers and new members of the Board of Directors to serve terms beginning July 1.

Marvin Tudor of Huntington will serve the second year of his two-year term as President of the Board in 2012-13.

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame was established in 1962 and opened its museum in New Castle in 1990.

 

PAL lists results for week ending June 30

The Huntington Police Athletic League has announced results for play the week ending June 30.

Coaches Pitch
First Federal stayed hot, beating Erie Haven, 24-11, and Farm Bureau, 18-2. Bailey-Love fell short to Bippus Bank, 20-18, but blanked Brick House Grill, 7-0. Craig Martz triumphed over Zahm Excavating, 17-8, but fell to Bailey-Love, 23-18. Farm Bureau defeated Kiwanis, 13-8. Erie Haven edged Eco Water, 13-10. Zahm Excavating snuck by Frederick's, 17-14. Kiwanis got the win against Dirt Excavating, 15-8.

 

Top performers names in scramble, ladies' play at Etna Acres

Jim and Jenny Morris sunk the longest putt on the seventh hole at seven feet, two inches in Etna Acres Scramble League action at Etna Acres Golf Course on Thursday, June 28.

Don and Gary Sweet were closest to the hole on the second hole at 11 feet, 10 inches, while Carol and Bob Clabaugh were closest to the eighth at 16 feet, two inches.

Brad Farlow and Dan Sparling had the least putts made with 10.

 

Etna Acres names Little City Junior Tour winners

Jackson Leland, Elizabeth Conley, Austin Trump and Dayna Dale emerged as the winners of the Little City Junior Tour at Etna Acres Golf Course on Wednesday, June 25.

The event contained 64 participants from Howard, Tipton, Wabash and Huntington, as well as Grant and Miami Counties.

Leland finished first for the high school boys with a score of 83. Nathan Edwards also scored an 83, but finished second. Richie Brooks came in third with 85.

 

Foursome hits 31 to win June 25 SeniorLeague play at Etna Acres

The quartet of Steve Davis, Ed Ulshafer, Russ Felton and Mick Van Asdall emerged as the champions of the Etna Acres Senior League on Wednesday, June 25, at Etna Acres Golf Course with a score of 31.

Jim DuBois, Jack Love, Steve McCammack and Jim Large also scored a 31, but finished second.

In third with a score of 32 was the group of Lee Richards, Al Pilkins, Bob Anglin and John Myers.

Closest to the pin on Par 3's were Sam Rumple on the second hole, Al Pilkins of the eighth hole, Steve McCammack on the fourth hole and Steve Davis on the third.

Mid-Central College Conference changes name to Crossroads League

The Mid-Central College Conference has changed its name to Crossroads League.

Huntington University is one of 10 colleges and universities that are a part of the athletic conference.

The conference also includes Bethel College, Goshen College, Grace College, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian University, Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, the University of St. Francis, Spring Arbor University and Taylor University.

 

Fort Wayne Cubs win BPA North State crown at Columbia City

The Fort Wayne Cubs 12U team, which includes a Huntington player, are the BPA North State Tournament champions.

Konner Morris, of Huntington, is a member of the team.

The tournament was played at Morsches Park, in Columbia City, June 22-24.

Drabenstot picked for BCSN team

Huntington North High School graduate Rex Drabenstot, currently playing for the University of Saint Francis, in Fort Wayne, is an honorable mention pick for the 2012 Beyond College Sports Network Preseason All-American Team.

Drabenstot plays on the defensive line.

The Cougars open their new season on Aug. 25 at Texas College.

 

 

 

Area Colts draftee to speak in Markle

Chandler Harnish will discuss his faith and his dream of playing professional football during a tailgate party July 15 at the Markle Church of Christ.

Harnish played football at Norwell High School and at Northern Illinois University. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts as the final pick of the 2012 NFL draft.

The tailgate party is open to the community and will include food, games, prizes and giveaways. It will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, located at 455 E. Morse St. in Markle. Tickets can be purchased by calling the church at 758-2171.
