Grace sweeps HU softball squad

The Huntington University softball team suffered a sweep to visiting Grace College, falling 6-4 and 10-2 on Saturday, April 8.

The pair of defeats snapped the Foresters’ six-game winning streak, dropping them 15-12-1 overall and 10-8 in Crossroads League play.

Both teams came up with two big offensive innings in the opening game, with the Lancers getting the better end of the deal. Grace produced six of its 11 hits in the first inning to plate five runs for the early advantage.

Lady Vikes start season 1-2 at Penn tourney

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team went 1-2 in a tournament at Penn High School, in Mishawaka, on Saturday, April 8.

The Lady Vikings kicked off the tourney with a 14-1 rout of Lafayette Jefferson.

Mackenzi Cannici highlighted Huntington North’s big offensive showing with a home run, a double and a pair of singles. Her fellow senior, Hannah Middlebrooks, also came up big, smacking a dinger and a pair of one-baggers.

Kendra Arnold and Sydney Selvage pitched the Lady Vikes to the win.

McCutcheon stops HNHS diamond boys

Host Lafayette McCutcheon rallied for four runs in the sixth inning and then stopped a Huntington North rally in the seventh inning to defeat the Vikings, 8-6, on Friday, March 7.

Huntington North, 1-1, pushed across a run in the top of the sixth inning to knot the contest at 4-4, but McCutcheon came back in the bottom of the frame with a four-spot to take an 8-4 lead. The Vikings plated a pair of runners in the top of the top of the seventh before McCutcheon got the fire put out.

McCutcheon scored three runs in the second and HNHS matched that in the third inning.

JLVs win title at Spiece

The seventh-grade Junior Lady Vikings basketball team won the FAAST championship at Spiece Fieldhouse, in Fort Wayne, on Saturday, March 25. Huntington Parks and Recreation Department to again host adult softball league this year

Huntington Parks and Recreation will be hosting adult softball leagues once again this year.

Co-Ed Softball will begin April 30 while Men’s League Softball will commence May 2. There is a fee to enroll a team. All entry fees are due by April 14.

Both softball leagues follow all Amateur Softball Association rules. For further rules and regulations regarding the leagues or to enroll a team, contact Huntington Parks and Recreation by calling 358-2323 or emailing sharon.lamkin@huntington.in.us.

Women golfers eighth at Marian invitational

The Huntington University women's golf team placed last among eight teams competing at the Marian University Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4, at the Broadmoor Country Club.

The Foresters finished with a score of 770, posting a 393 on the first day of play but picking up 16 strokes on the second day for a 377.

Betsy Schroeder paced HU with a 32nd place finish overall, shooting a 185. Rachel Blauert followed with a 188, Leah Thompson had a 197 and Sophie Frazier scored a 200.

Freshman pitcher Lairen Miller pitched a first-game shutout and then put out a fire in the last inning of the second game to help the Huntington University softball team sweep past visiting Spring Arbor University on Tuesday, April 4, in a doubleheader.

Miller threw a six-hit shutout as the Foresters won, 2-0, in the opener, then she got the final two outs of the game for HU in an 8-6 win in the nightcap as it improved to 15-10-1 on the season.

Combs is Crossroads League Player of Week

Dalton Combs, a senior on the Huntington University baseball team, was named player of the week by the Crossroads League on Monday, April 3.

Combs helped lead Huntington to a perfect 6-0 record last week. The Monroe native went 12 for 23 at the plate for .a 522 batting average, which included five doubles and his fifth home run of the year. He also drove in eight runs, registered a slugging percentage of .870, drew four walks and posted three steals.

HU trackmen 10th at Hanover Invite

The Huntington University men’s track team placed 10th at the Hanover College Invitational on Saturday, April 1.

Brooks Gerke earned 12 of his team’s 27 points by claiming second in pole vault with a mark of 13-03.50 and fifth in javelin with a toss of 147-02.25.

Avniel Barrow had a strong showing in sprints by finishing third in the 200-meter dash, in :22.73, and sixth in the 100-meter dash, in :11.26. Other point-getters for Huntington included Austin Willey in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sixth in 10:29.80, and Bradey Gerke in high jump, fifth in 5-08.25.

HU trackwomen 12th at Hanover Invite

The Huntington University women’s track team finished 12th at the Hanover College Invitational on Saturday, April 1.

Nicole Pennington paced the Foresters with a pair of fourth-place finishes by clocking in at :12.78 in the 100-meter dash and :26.52 in the 200-meter dash.

Michelle Kelsey cleared 4-08.75 in high jump to take fifth while Jean Donaldson earned sixth in javelin with a heave of 142-07.50.

HU men golfers sixth at Spring Cougar Classic

The Huntington University men’s golf team played 36 holes and finished with a 49-over-par 625 to finish sixth out of seven teams at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Spring Cougar Classic on Saturday, April 1, at Chapel Hill Golf Course, in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Luis Esteban fired a seven-over-par 151 for 16th overall out of 43 golfers. Cale Carr carded a 153 for 22nd place. Zak Cummings finished third for the Foresters by shooting a 158, good for 29th place. Chandler Rang, 164, and Zach Borntreger, 166, rounded out Huntington’s scoring, finishing 34th and 36th, respectively.

Huntington University volleyball team to host series of camps

The Huntington University volleyball team will host a series of camps this summer at the Merillat Complex.

The Shondell Day Camps featuring Dave Shondell, Purdue University head coach; Steve Shondell, former Ball State University head coach; John Shondell, Purdue University associate head coach; and Kyle Shondell, Huntington University head coach,  is slated for July 18 and 19 for boys and girls in grades six through 12.

Each coach will lead a three-hour session. Cost is per session or for all four sessions.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus announces annual golf outing at Norwood in May

Pathfinder Kids Kampus Child Care Center, in Huntington, will host its 26th annual golf outing on May 17.

The fund-raising event, sponsored by David Culp and Company, will take place at Norwood Golf Club in Huntington.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. and lunch sponsored by SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church begins at 11:30 a.m.

Shotgun start begins at 12:30 p.m. Appetizers, awards and auctions will take place after golf.

HU netwomen fall to Hillsdale

The Huntington University women's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match in a 2-7 loss to host Hillsdale College on Saturday, April 1.

First and second singles players Constance Golz and Meg Dolde, respectively, got the Foresters' wins. Golz was ahead of Halle Hyman, 7-5, when the Hillsdale player retired, and Dolde took a 6-3, 6-4 win over Madeline Bissett.

Anastasiia Evstifeeva at third singles lost 1-6, 2-6 to Dana Buck, Erin Van Kampen fell 1-6, 1-6 to Kamryn Matthews and Allison Smith at fifth singles was a 0-6, 0-6 victim of Julia Formentin.
