Teusch wins state title

Preston Teusch (top of podium), an eighth-grader at Crestview Middle School, won the 85-pound weight class at the Middle School State Championships, organized by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association and held Sunday, Feb. 12, in New Castle. Teusch, who won the 75-pound weight class last year, yielded only four points throughout the tournament.

Season ends for Barton at swim sectional finals

The season came to an end for Cody Barton, the lone member of the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team competing in the finals of the Warsaw Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Advancing to the state finals hinged on either posting a first-place finish or a state standard time. The closest Barton came was with a third-place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke. The senior touched the wall in 1:06.19, which bettered his clocking in preliminaries of 1:07.46.

Warsaw’s Grant Knight won the race handily, finishing in a minute flat.

Woll, Foresters sizzle nets in win over MVNU

Strong shooting propelled the Huntington University men’s basketball team to an 88-78 victory over host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The Foresters shot a sizzling 64.4 percent, going 38 of 59 from the field, and a perfect 7 for 7 at the free-throw line. Senior Daniel Woll tallied a game-high 27 points, missing only three of his 16 field goal attempts. Junior Mike Bush netted 18 points while dishing out 10 assists and corralling eight rebounds. Sophomore Mason Coverstone added 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

HU baseball team suffers sweep by Campbellsville

The Huntington University baseball team suffered a pair of lopsided defeats to host Campbellsville University, dropping the first game, 10-1, and the second, 7-0, on Saturday, Feb. 18.

In the opening contest, the Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning before adding a solo tally in the fourth and six insurance runs in the fifth. The Foresters managed to avoid the shutout, tallying what would turn out to be their lone run of the doubleheader in the seventh.

HU diamond men open season with split

The Huntington University baseball team opened its season with a split versus host Campbellsville University, winning the opener, 5-1, before suffering a shutout in the nightcap, 8-0, on Friday, Feb. 17.

In the first game, the Foresters trailed 1-0 through the first four innings before their offense came to life in the fifth and sixth frames. Coach Mike Frame’s squad plated two runs in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to craft a permanent lead.

Vikings fall to Plymouth, 45-40

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team fell to host Plymouth, 45-40, on Friday, Feb. 17.

The Vikings trailed the Pilgrims by a single tally, 6-5, after the first quarter, but couldn’t keep pace with their hosts in the following two frames. Plymouth built a 21-14 lead by halftime and expanded it to 35-21 by the end of the third quarter for its biggest advantage of the contest. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad showed some fight in the final frame, whittling the Pilgrims’ lead down to single digits, but the hosts managed to hang on for the win.

Barton qualifies twice for sectional finals

Cody Barton, a senior on the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team, advanced to the finals of the Warsaw Sectional in two events at the sectional preliminaries on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The top eight finishers in each race have a chance to advance to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium, in Indianapolis, by winning the finals or achieving a state standard at the finals, which are set for Saturday, Feb. 18. Additionally, anyone reaching a state standard in the consolation finals could also advance.

HU women bowlers struggle at Indy meet

The Huntington University women’s bowling team placed 42nd at the 48th annual Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic, which ran from Saturday, Feb. 11, to Sunday, Feb. 12, at Western Bowl, in Indianapolis.

The Foresters were led by Brianna Cearbaugh, who posted a six-game total of 1,203 pins for a 200.5 average. Senior Brooke Ewing also had a solid outing with a 1,082 total for a 180.3 average.

HU men bowlers 16th in Indy meet

The Huntington University men’s bowling team captured 16th place at the 48th annual Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic, which ran from Saturday, Feb. 11, to Sunday, Feb. 12, at Western Bowl, in Indianapolis.

The Foresters were paced by senior Derek Beckler, who finished with a six-game total of 1,220 pins, good for a 203.3 average. Senior Seth Walker came up big for Huntington in its final team game of 1,103 by rolling a 258.

HU women hang on for win over Taylor

The Huntington University women’s basketball team hung on for a 75-68 win over visiting Taylor University on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

With the Foresters clinging to a four-point lead, 67-63, with 39 seconds remaining, seniors Miranda Palmer and Allyson Trout came up big for their squad on senior night. The duo evenly split Huntington’s final eight points of the game at the free-throw line to seal the win.

Trout finished with a team-high 18 points while Palmer topped out at 13. Sophomore Maddie Richer also scored 13 points and junior Miranda White chipped in 12.

HU shooting woes help Taylor to win

The Huntington University men's basketball team chose senior night to have it's poorest home shooting display of the year and wound up with an 81-71 loss to visiting Taylor on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Coach Ty Platt's crew connected on just 26 of 64 shots from the field for 40.6 percent, including hitting just 11 of 31 in the second half for 35.5 percent, on the way to falling for 15-14 on the season, 6-11 in the Crossroads League.

HU's Hicks punches third ticket to NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship

Senior Christiana Hicks punched her third straight ticket to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday night, Feb. 10, with a winning triple jump of 11.07 meters at the Defiance College Dick Small Invitational.

Sprinter Nicole Pennington was a double-winner for HU at the meet and Aspen Dirr also got a win as HU placed second with 99 points, 50 off the total of champion Manchester.

Hicks, a Fort Wayne native will be on the prowl for her second NAIA All-American honor as she placed eighth at indoor national last year to earn the designation.

HU trackmen second at Defiance invite

The Huntington University men's track team placed second at the Defiance College Dick Small Invitational on Friday, Feb. 10.

The 800-meter relay team of Michael Bowman, Nick Childs, CJ Robertson and Elston Jones got the lone HU win at the meet, crossing the tape in 1:38.65.

Avniel Barrow led the rest of the HU contingent with a pair of top five individual finishes. The native of the Bahamas took a second in the 60-meter dash, in :07.16, and was fifth in the 200-meter dash, in :23.82. Both times were personal marks.

The sixth-grade Junior Lady Vikings basketball team won the Club 1 league tournament at the SportONE Parkview Fieldhouse, in Fort Wayne, on Feb. 5.
