Vikings pull away from New Haven for win

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team pulled away from host New Haven in the second half to post a 60-52 win on Saturday, Feb. 4.

With the game tied at the half, 25-25, the Vikings slipped ahead in the third quarter, 37-34. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad then proceeded to take its biggest lead of the contest, 56-46, in the final frame before riding out the eight-point victory.

With the win, Huntington North, 14-5, 6-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference, claims at least a share of the conference title.

Platt steps up as Foresters hold off IWU

Freshman Konner Platt made sure the Huntington University men’s basketball team hung on for a 93-90 win versus Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Platt Arena.

After going into the break with a 42-39 lead, the Foresters gradually expanded their advantage over the course of the second half and led by as many as 12 points, 82-70, with 4:44 left in the game. But the Wildcats, ranked sixth in the nation, weren’t finished. The visitors proceeded to chip away at Huntington’s lead over the following 4:03 and reduced it to a single point, 87-86, with 41 seconds remaining.

Three Viking wrestlers punch tickets to semi-state

Three members of the Huntington North High School wrestling team advanced to semi-state with wins at the Carroll Wrestling Regional on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Senior Eli Parrett at 182 pounds, sophomore Charlie Agnew at 195 and freshman Darryn Kuhl at 106 each punched their ticket to the New Haven Semi-State, set for Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, in Fort Wayne.

Agnew and Kuhl both placed third in their respective weight classes while Parrett finished fourth.

Lady Vikes sending several back to Warsaw with state dreams alive

The Huntington North High School girls' swim team advanced seven individuals and two relay teams to the finals of the Warsaw Girls' Swim Sectionals in the prelimaries on Thursday night, Feb. 2.

The top eight finishers have the chance to advance to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis by winning the finals or reaching a state standard. Additionally, anyone reaching a state standard in the consolation finals could also advance.

Forester women come up short but Palmer grabs scoring mark

Although the Huntington University women’s basketball team came up short to host Grace College, 61-59, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Foresters still had something to celebrate as their senior star, Miranda Palmer, became the program’s all-time leading scorer.

With her second basket of the game, Palmer broke Amy Bechtel’s scoring record of 2,019 points. The 5-6 guard finished with 19 points for the contest, which led all scorers. She also dished out a game-best five assists.

Comeback comes up short for HU men against Grace

A second-half comeback came up short for the Huntington University men's basketball team as it lost to host Grace College, 84-74, on Tuesday night, Jan. 31.

The Foresters, 14-11 overall and 5-8 in the Crossroads League, were down by 16 at halftime but had pulled within five points at 61-56 with less than eight minutes to play when Grace went to its big guys down low to stem the tide.

9 Viking wrestlers move on to regional

The Huntington North High School wrestling team advanced nine of its 13 wrestlers and captured third place at the New Haven Sectional on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Of its advancing wrestlers, four earned runner-up honors for Huntington North, which finished with a register of 166 at the 10-team tournament. Posting a top-four finish granted a wrestler advancement to the Carroll Regional, which is slated for Saturday, Feb. 4.

Vikings dominate DeKalb, 45-22

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team dominated visiting DeKalb, 45-22, on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Vikings were as hot from the field as the Barons were cold. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad sizzled the nets, shooting 58.3 percent on 17 of 29 marksmanship while DeKalb shot just 19.4 percent, converting only 6 of 31 field goal attempts. DeKalb’s offensive performance tied for the second-worst ever by a Huntington North opponent.

The hosts led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter, 18-8 at halftime and 31-17 after three frames.

Palmer hits winner over SAU for yet another highlight

It was a game to remember for Miranda Palmer, who not only scored the 2,000th point of her career, but hit the game-winning shot for the Huntington University women’s basketball team in a 63-62 thriller versus host Spring Arbor University on Saturday, Jan. 28.

In a contest that featured a half-dozen lead changes and 11 ties, the last of those deadlocks came at the 2:24 mark in the fourth quarter and saw the game knotted up at 60. Palmer hit the basket that tied the game, getting an assist from fellow senior Allyson Trout.

Foresters fall to Spring Arbor on hardwood

The Huntington University men’s basketball team suffered an 85-72 defeat to host Spring Arbor University on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Free throws were the difference as the Cougars outscored the Foresters at the charity stripe by 15 points. Spring Arbor drained 23 of 29 shots at the line for 79.3 percent while Huntington tossed in 8 of just 12 shots for 66.7 percent.

The Cougars led 41-33 after the first half to force their guests to play catch-up in the second stanza.

South Side blows out Lady Vikes

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team got blown out by visiting South Side, 61-37, on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

A poor second quarter doomed the Lady Vikings. Trailing the Lady Archers by just four points, 15-11, after the first quarter, Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad proceeded to tally only four points in the entire second period while South Side tossed in 16 to craft a commanding 31-15 lead by halftime. The Lady Archers expanded their advantage to 52-26 by the end of three frames on the way to the lopsided win.
