Forester women snap losing streak against MVNU

The Huntington University women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 87-73 victory over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Foresters, 10-11, 4-6 in the Crossroads League, took a 15-11 lead in the first quarter and expanded their margin from there. Coach Lori Culler’s squad tossed in 29 points in the second quarter compared to 18 for the Cougars to go up 44-29 at halftime and 26 points in the third versus 19 for the visitors to craft a 70-48 advantage before settling for the 14-point margin at the final buzzer.

Bush nets career-best 32 to lead Foresters to win

Mike Bush poured in a career-high 32 points and dished out 13 assists to lead the Huntington University men’s basketball team to a 95-85 victory over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Bush, a junior, knocked down 13 of 19 shots from the field and 4 of 6 free throws to post his big point total for the Foresters, 14-8, 5-5 in Crossroads League play. The talented point guard was a key contributor during a second-half run that turned a three-point deficit into a comfortable lead for Huntington that it wouldn’t relinquish.

Strong second half propels Vikings over Braves

A strong second half propelled the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team past host Bellmont, 53-36, on Saturday, Jan. 21.

After leading at halftime by just a point, 25-24, the Vikings outscored the Braves 28-12 in the second half to win by a comfortable margin. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad upped its advantage to 38-27 in the third quarter and kept up the intensity in the fourth, taking its biggest lead of the contest by the final buzzer.

Misfiring Lady Vikes lose to Bellmont

Poor shooting sunk the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team against visiting Bellmont, 48-35, on Friday, Jan. 20.

A game after scoring 81 points for their best offensive effort of the year, the Lady Vikings posted their lowest point total of the season, shooting just 25.6 percent from the field on 11 of 43 marksmanship.

Lady Vikes shoot down Northrop

Hot shooting propelled the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team to an 81-68 win over visiting Northrop on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The Lady Vikings posted their highest point total of the season behind a 23 of 37 effort from the field for a sizzling 62.2 percent. Huntington North’s accuracy was also evident at the free throw line, where it buried 32 of 43 attempts for 74.4 percent.

Marksmanship woes plague HU women in loss to Goshen

Poor shooting did in the Huntington University women’s basketball team in a 73-49 loss to host Goshen College on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The Foresters, 9-11, 3-6 in the Crossroads League, connected on just 17 of 55 shots from the field for 30.9 percent, which included a 5 of 23 showing from three-point land.

Huntington trailed 23-12 after the first quarter and 39-24 at the half. Coach Lori Culler’s squad managed to trim the deficit to 54-44 in the third, but scored only five points in the fourth while Goshen tallied 19 to put the game far out of reach.

Lady Vikes to collect for BIAB at Jan. 20 contest

The varsity and junior varsity Lady Vikings basketball teams will collect canned goods and monetary donations for Blessings in a Backpack on Friday, Jan. 20.

Specific items being sought include cans of tomato or chicken noodle soup and canned ravioli.

The Huntington chapter of Blessings in a Backpack, a nationwide not-for-profit organization, provides weekend meals to children who participate in the free meal program at school.

Tackett keeps hot streak rolling; captures sixth title with win in Japan

Huntington native EJ Tackett won his sixth title on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, topping the DHC PBA Japan Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Bentencho Grandbowl in Osaka, Japan.

After narrowly qualifying for the stepladder finals, Tackett proceeded to knock off the three bowlers seeded ahead of him to set up a championship showdown with top-seeded Shota Kawazoe. Tackett defeated the Japanese native by a score of 259-216.

Hoops Hall plaque at HNHS

A plaque honoring Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductees from Huntington County was hung up at the entrance to North Arena at Huntington North High School recently. The plaque was a project spearheaded by Bill Walker, vice president north of the hall of fame’s executive committee; Kris Teusch, Huntington North athletic director; and Joe Santa, owner of TCP Awards & Apparel, which made the plaque. In addition to inductees’ names, the plaque states the capacity in which they made the hall, what county high school they were associated with and what year they were inducted.

Norwell slides past Lady Vike swimgirls

Senior Emma Helmich and freshman Laney Shaw each picked up an individual win and swam a leg on a winning relay team but the Huntington North High School girls' swim team fell to visitiing Norwell, 94-76.

Helmich actually tied for her win, doing so with Alyssa Cyrus in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.71, while Shaw claimed the 50-yard freestyle outright, in :28.95.

The pair teamed with freshman Allie Aschliman and sophomore Macy Lange to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, in 1:55.16.

Norwell dumps Viking swimmers

Cody Barton and Conner Mason picked up wins but the Huntington North High School boys' swim team fell to visiting Norwell, 120-42, on Tuesday night, Jan. 17, at the Parkview Huntington YMCA.

Barton, a senior, had an eight-second win in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:02.03, while Mason,  a junior, easily won the 500-yard freestyle with a clocking of 6:20.18, almost 19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Barton also picked up a silver finish for the Vikes, doing so in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.61.

CMS boys fall twice to Edgewood

The Crestview Middle School boys’ seventh and eighth-grade basketball teams each fell to visiting Edgewood on Monday, Jan. 16.

The seventh-grade Cougars suffered a 52-24 defeat.

Zach Hubbart tossed in seven points for Crestview, 11-5, while Reid Eckert tallied five.

The Cougs’ eighth-grade squad took a 48-32 loss.

Crestview, 10-6, got 10 points from Reid Johnson and eight from Noah Zahn.

Foresters lose cat and mouse battle with Goshen

The Huntington University men's basketball team lost a cat and mouse battle with host Goshen College, 85-80, on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Foresters, 13-8 on the season and 4-5 in the Crossroads League, saw Goshen expand a two-point lead into 11 points midway through the second half, before HU crawled back to within three points with just four minutes left. Goshen, however, quickly expanded the lead back to seven points and was able to hang on go to 10-11 on the year, 3-6 in league play.

Viking defense stymies Wildkats

Strong defense through the first three quarters of the game lifted the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team to a 53-42 win over visiting Kokomo on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Vikings held Kokomo to just 21 points through the first three quarters of the contest, and despite the Wildcats matching that in the fourth quarter, Huntington was never really threatened for its 11th win in 15 outings this season.
