Emma Helmich produced two wins to lead the Huntington North High School girls’ swim team to fourth place at the Northeast 8 Conference meet, hosted by Norwell on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Helmich topped the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. The senior swam the former race in 2:08.26 – eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher – and the latter one in 1:03.06. For her efforts, Helmich was one of two Lady Vikings to receive first-team all-conference honors.

Cody Barton posted two top-five finishes for the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team, which finished sixth at the Northeast 8 Conference meet, hosted by Norwell on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Barton captured third in the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. The senior completed the former race in 1:06.73 and the latter in 1:00.22.

Led by Jacob Hall, the Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team captured third place at the Wild Bill Tournament, held at Concordia Lutheran on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Hall, a junior, topped the 126-pound weight class, giving the Vikings their lone individual title on the day.
Seniors Wilson Lopshire and Eli Parrett both put forth runner-up efforts for Huntington North. Lopshire placed second at 170 pounds while Parrett earned silver in action at 182 pounds.

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team captured second place at the Valparaiso Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Lady Vikings totaled 100.700 points to achieve their runner-up finish at the seven-team event.
Brianna Bates produced Huntington North’s best finish on the day, taking third in the floor exercise with a 9.250. Aleah Eckert claimed fifth in the event with a 9.100 while Bailey Harris and Danielle Korporal notched ninth and 10th with an 8.800 and 8.775, respectively.

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team lost its first conference game of the season, falling to host Columbia City, 58-42, on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Lady Vikings, 10-7, 4-1 in the Northeast 8 Conference, trailed the Lady Eagles after the first quarter, 11-9, and at halftime, 25-17. They made up a bit of that deficit in the third, 39-34, but their conference rivals dashed any thoughts of a fourth-quarter comeback with a 19-point frame that put the game out of reach.

The Huntington University women’s basketball team suffered an 89-49 defeat to fifth-ranked Marian University on Saturday, Jan. 14, at John Grimes Court.
Shooting just 32.8 percent for the game on 20 of 61 marksmanship from the field, the game got away from the Foresters early. Coach Lori Culler’s squad trailed 24-15 after the first quarter and 44-26 at the half. The Knights expanded their advantage to 66-36 by the end of the third before outscoring their guests 23-13 in the final frame to cap the lopsided win.

Mike Bush
A late run helped the Huntington University men’s basketball team finish off host Marian University, 99-89, on Saturday, Jan. 14.
It was a game to remember for the Foresters’ Mike Bush, who dished out 10 assists to break the school record for most dimes in a season. The junior has racked up 220 assists on the year, besting the previous mark of 214 set by Matt Eberly in 1997.
Bush also did plenty of scoring himself, tallying a team-high 22 points. He played a key role in the late surge that propelled Huntington to the win.

Hunter Hollowell and Zach Daugherty led the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 63-51 victory over visiting Columbia City on Friday, Jan. 13.
Hollowell, a senior, and Daugherty, a sophomore, tallied 21 and 19 points, respectively, to help the Vikings improve to 10-4, 3-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference.

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team outlasted host Leo, 51-46, on Thursday, Jan. 12.
The Lady Vikings took a 12-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Lions prevented them from expanding it any further by halftime, keeping the deficit to just four points, 27-23. Leo shortened the gap to three, 39-36, by the end of the third, but Huntington North finished strong, taking an eight-point lead – its biggest of the contest – with just 25 seconds left in the final frame to secure the win.

The Huntington County Special Olympics basketball team will be featured for a “Special 10 Minutes” at half-time of the Huntington North High School varsity boys’ basketball game on Friday, Jan. 13, in the Huntington North gymnasium.
The Special Olympics athletes will have “10 Special Minutes” to scrimmage and showcase their talent to the community.
