Foresters trounce Spring Arbor by 30

The Huntington University men’s basketball team trounced visiting Spring Arbor University, 84-54, on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Sophomore Tyler Arens scored a game-high 25 points while junior Mike Bush tallied 21 points and dispensed 10 assists for Huntington, 11-7, 2-4 in Crossroads League play.

The Foresters totaled 42 points in each half while limiting their guests to 33 in the first and 21 in the second.

Lady Vikings edge East Noble

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team edged visiting East Noble, 40-37, on Friday, Jan. 6.

Down 7-3 after the first quarter and 16-13 at halftime, the Lady Vikings knotted things up in the third, 25-25, before outscoring the Lady Knights in the final frame, 15-12, to record the narrow win.

Huntington North, 9-5, 3-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference, got 15 points from junior Karmen Koch and 11 from senior Kylie Kaylor. Junior Hollyn Anderson helped fuel the offense with four assists.

Cougar hoop squads log wins over Raiders

The Crestview Middle School boys’ seventh and eighth-grade basketball teams each logged a win over visiting Riverview on Thursday, Jan. 5.

The Cougars’ eighth-grade squad won 43-18. Alex Gass and Mitch Gerber led the hosts with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

The Crestview seventh-graders posted a 33-13 victory. Braden Estep scored eight points and Ashton Hosler tallied seven for the Cougs, 9-3.

Aschliman win highlights 5-team meet for HNHS swimgirls

A win by Allie Aschliman in the 100-yard butterfly was the highlight of the evening for the Huntington North High School girls’ swim team at a five-squad meet hosted by Warsaw on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Behind Aschliman’s gold showing and other top-five finishes, the Lady Vikings placed third at the meet with a register of 99 points.

Aschliman topped the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 1:04.69. The freshman also claimed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:29.97.

Barton's two runner-up finishes lead Vikes at 4-way swim

Cody Barton was a two-time runner-up for the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team as it took fourth at a four-team meet hosted by Warsaw on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Barton, a senior, was the silver finisher in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. He swam the former race in 2:18.90 and the latter in 1:06.90.

Sophomore Keegan Mautz was the only other Viking to post a top-five finish in individual action, taking fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a clocking of 2:17.05.

Bates wins three to lead Lady Vike gymnasts to win

Brianna Bates won three events to lead the Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team to a 100.950-92.700 season-opening victory over visiting DeKalb on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Bates, a junior, topped the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The dominant showing propelled her to the all-around title.

Bates posted a score of 8.350 for her victory on bars. Senior Samantha Doll logged a podium finish for the Lady Vikings, too, placing third with a 7.650.

Bates tallied an 8.800 on beam while freshman Aleah Eckert totaled an 8.350 to take third.

Lady Vikes thrash North Side

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team shut out Fort Wayne North Side in the opening quarter on the way to a 64-29 thrashing of the visitors on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Lady Vikings, 8-5, jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter advantage and stretched the margin to 31-7 by halftime. The tally was 45-18 after three quarters.

Karmen Koch led HNHS with 18 points, four assists and four steals on the night.  Hollyn Anderson added 13 points and Rileigh Johnson contributed 12.

Taylor's second half start sinks Foresters

A 27-6 run by host Taylor at the start of the second half proved the undoing for the Huntington University men's basketball team in an 82-71 loss on Tuesday night, Jan. 3.

The big beginning for Taylor gave it a 30-point lead at 66-36, and although HU outscored the Trojans 35-16 the rest of the way, it wasn't enough to prevent HU's seventh loss against 10 wins this year.

Mike Bush led the Foresters with 23 points and nine assists. Mason Coverstone tallied 16 points and Tyler Arens added 11.

Palmer, Trout ignite fire as HU burns through Greenville

Seniors Miranda Palmer and Allyson Trout scored 27 points in the first half as the Huntington University women's basketball blew out visiting Greenville College, 88-45, on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Palmer scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the opening half and Trout had 10 as HU jumped out to a 46-20 halftime lead and never looked back en route to breaking a five-game loss skid and improving to 8-7 on the season.

Local YMCA to feature Black Belt Challenge on Jan. 7

Holders of black belts in karate will have an opportunity to compete against their peers in the Black Belt Challenge, set for Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA.

The tournament will feature three rings of empty-hand kata competition, ranging from novice to intermediate/advanced to black belt. There will also be three rings of weapons kata competition, with competitors exhibiting three different weapons.

Following that part of the challenge, there will be a sparring tournament for male and female competitors that will unfold in bracket form.

Vikes lose to Valpo to place fourth at Holiday Hoops Tournament

A poor third quarter was the undoing of the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team as it lost to Valparaiso in the third place game of the Holiday Hoops Tournament Friday evening, Dec. 30, at Huntington University.

The Vikings, 7-4, held a 23-21 lead on the Valpo Vikes, 9-1, heading into the third quarter, but Valpo won the frame, 16-5, to make sure a second consecutive loss was not to be.

Valpo was undefeated until it lost to Merrillville, 62-60, earlier in the day.

Eventual champ HSE slows Vikings in Holiday Hoop Tournament

After a successful run on Thursday, the Huntington North boys' varsity basketball team had its run for the top of the Holiday Hoops Tournament stopped in the first game on Friday, Dec. 30, by eventual champion Hamilton Southeastern, 52-47.

The Royals, 9-1, turned a 21-21 halftime tie into a small advantage at 36-34 heading into the final frame, and were able to add a few points to the margin by game's end against the Vikes, who fell to 7-3 on the season.
