Frosh Shaw leads Lady Vike swimmers to second win

Freshman Laney Shaw won two individual races and was on two winning relay teams to lead the Huntington North High School girls' swim team past visiting Fort Wayne Canterbury, 101-66, on Tuesday night, Nov. 22.

Shaw captured the 50-yard freestyle, in :28.59, and the 100-yard backstroke, in 1:13.18, to help the Lady Vikings push to 2-0 on the young season. She also teamed with fellow frosh Allie Aschliman and seniors Emma Helmich and Emma Gordon to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, in 1:57.80, and the 400-yard freestyle relay, in 4:16.04.

Trio of double-winners not quite enough for swimboys

A trio of double-winners wasn't quite enough for the Huntington North High School boys' swim team as it was nipped by visiting Fort Wayne Canterbury, 64-58, on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Senior Cody Barton, junior Conner Mason and sophomore Keegan Mautz all wound up with two gold-medal finishes for the Vikings, 0-1, and the trio also were on a successful relay team.

Crestview cagers fall short to Norwell

The Crestview Middle School boys’ eighth-grade basketball team fell short to visiting Norwell, 56-53, on Monday, Nov. 21.

Sam Thompson paced the Cougars, 2-1, with 24 points. Noah Zahn scored 15 points while Reid Johnson dished out seven assists.

Crestview’s seventh-grade squad also lost, 35-25.

Zach Hubbert tallied six points while Brady Henline totaled five for the Cougars, 1-2.

Lady Vikes upend Northfield

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team upended host Northfield, 58-40, on Saturday, Nov. 19.

The Lady Vikings never trailed against the Lady Norse, leading by as many as 21 points on their way to securing the win, their second against three losses.

Senior Kylie Kaylor and junior Rileigh Johnson led Huntington North with 14 points apiece. Junior Hollyn Anderson chipped in 10 points while corralling six rebounds and dispensing three assists.

Northfield, 2-2, was paced by Ariel Dale, who scored 14 points and collected eight rebounds.

HU's Dirr finishes in top third at NAIA cross country meet

Aspen Dirr, a sophomore on the Huntington University women’s cross country team, placed 103rd at the NAIA Women’s Cross Country Championships, held at North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, IL, on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Running on the national stage for the second time in as many years, Dirr crossed the finish line in 18:48.49 for her placement among the field of 334 runners. She knocked off over two minutes from last year’s time of 20:58.0 and finished almost 200 spots higher.

HU men hold off late run by Ohio Christian to win

The Huntington University men’s basketball team withstood a late run by host Ohio Christian University and a 51-point scoring spree by Marquis Johnson to come away with a 104-100 victory on Saturday, Nov. 19.

The Foresters handled the Trailblazers for much of the contest, going up by double digits, 15-3, just over five minutes into the game. Coach Ty Platt’s squad expanded its advantage to 24 points by halftime, 54-30, and maintained a 20-point cushion as late as the 6:19 mark in the second half.

Reiff goes off for 46 as Whitko tops Lady Vikes

Whitko’s Aly Reiff went off for 46 points and the visiting Lady Wildcats stuck the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team with a 66-60 defeat on Friday, Nov. 18.

The Lady Vikings led 14-8 after the first quarter and by as many as 11 points in the second. The Lady Wildcats, however, showed why they’re ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, battling back to tie the game up by halftime, 26-26. Whitko seized the lead in the third quarter, 45-43, then outscored Huntington North in the fourth, 21-17, to depart Bob Straight Court with the win.

Local gymnasts place well at Turkey Tumble

Huntington Gymnastics Academy had several members place at its Turkey Tumble competition, held Sunday, Nov. 13, in the Huntington North High School Fieldhouse.

Those members were:

Level 2

Amber Cale: All around, first; floor, first; bars, second; and beam, second.

Sarah Crist: Bars, third; floor, third; beam, fourth; and all around, fifth.

Adalyn Cutting: Vault, third; bars, fifth; and all around, seventh.

Norah Fisher: All around, ninth.

Discounted app fees for Turkey Trot end soon

The deadline to register for 12th annual Pathfinder Kids Kampus Turkey Trot at a discounted fee is Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Registrations will be accepted through the day of the race, which will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, although the fee is higher for those who register the final two days.

The event starts at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day at McDonald’s, in Huntington, and includes the Turkey Trot 5K walk/run and the one-mile Turkey Trail. Breakfast will be served by McDonald’s, the host sponsor of the race.

Lady Vike swimmers win season-opener behind Helmich, Aschliman

The Huntington North High School girls' swim team celebrated the return of Emma Helmich with a 98-85 win over host Bluffton on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Helmich, a state competitor two years ago as a sophomore who didn't compete for HNHS last year, got a pair of solo wins and was on two winning relay teams, and Allie Aschliman also added two solo wins and two relay victories to help the Lady Vikings get off on the right foot this season.

Alyssa Brinkman also jumped on the gold medal bandwagon for HNHS.

Foresters hang on to defeat Rio Grande

Despite what it looks like, Huntington University's Devon Merder somehow got this shot off and scored against visiting University of Rio Grande on Tuesday, Nov. 15, helping the Foresters win the contest, 83-78.

The Huntington University men's basketball team hung on for an 83-78 win over visiting University of Rio Grande on Tuesday evening, Nov. 15.

The Foresters, 5-1, held a 46-32 lead over the RedStorm after the first half of play, but Rio Grande cut the margin to just three points in the opening six minutes of the second half, trailing 51-48. But Mike Bush and Austin Karaszia weren't about to surrender the lead as they combined for 10 of the Foresters' next 13 points to again push the advantage back to double digits.

Second quarter run pushes Carroll past Lady Vikes

A 19-6 run by visiting Carroll to finish out the first half doomed the Huntington North High School girls' basketball team in a 73-62 loss on Tuesday night, Nov. 15.

The Lady Vikes, 1-2, were up 23-22 when Carroll started its run, sparked by its pressing defense. When the dust settled at the half break, the Lady Chargers held a 41-29 advantage they weren't giving back.

Juniors Rileigh Johnson and Karmen Koch led the Lady Vikes with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Senior Kylie Kaylor tossed in 11 points and junior Larissa Johnson added eight.
